Gazette ‘Boy’ Wins Optimist Speech Contest
(Continued from page 1)
Garshwiler, vice-president of the Anaheim Optimists.
Legg's winning speech was entitled "Today's Need for Optimism." The speech stressed the need for a proper approach to contemporary national and international problems, explaining that this approach should consist primarily of a firm belief that the problems as they exist are not unsolvable.
On March 30 of this year, the same speech won Legg first place in local Optimist-sponsored competition and the opportunity to represent Anaheim at Pomona.
According to Garshwiler, the Optimists, in sponsoring oratorical activities, do so in the belief that these activities promote active interest in consideration and presentation of public problems and hence contribute directly to better citizenship.
Legg states that he has received the bulk of his public speaking the bulk of his public speaking school where he studies public speaking under Miss Louise Hitt. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald E. Legg, 824 North Sabina street.
Anaheim Optimists who accompanied Legg to Pomona were Tom Yellis, president; L. M. Lichtenwalter, chairman of the oratorical contest committee; Dr. C. O. Patterson; and Garshwiler.
Judges for the contest were professor H. H. Palmer of San Bernardo Highlight of the three-day opening will come Saturday, May 13 with the award of a new O'Keefe and Merritt range to some opening day participant. Tickets for the range will be available at Anaheim Appliance during the three opening days.
Service Department
"With our policy of providing the best merchandise at the lowest possible price, we intend to make Anaheim Appliance the largest and best appliance store in Anaheim," Shuman stated. We will also maintain a certified, dependable service department," he added.
Anaheim Appliance has added 1000 square feet of floor space and has tripled the amount of stock on hand, according to Shuman.
Manufacturers represented include Westinghouse, Kelvinator O'Keefe and Merritt, Crosley Chambers, Norge, Gaffers and Sattler, Bendix, Philco, and Zenith. On hand are television sets, radios and white goods, such as stoves, heaters, washing machines and other household appliances.
Featured in the store are the new laundry and television display rooms, situated so shoppers contemplating purchase of television and/or washers may try out the washers with the family laundry and watch television shows at the
Weatherman Says ‘Sunshine-Clear’
Sunshine and clear skies can be expected in California for the next several days, the weatherman said today.
Charts show that all storms have been moving northward into Alaska during the past few days.
There may be some increase in morning high fog along the coastal sections of California, and fresh to strong northwesterly winds will continue on the coast.
There will be a gradual trench of rising afternoon temperatures the next few days, the weather bureau said.
SALVAGE FOOD AT RAMOUSKI—Volunteer workers salvage food from ruins at Ramouski, Quebec, in an effort to provide some relief for the 1,000 homeless victims of a $12,000,000 fire that gutted buildings in a third of the town. Workers are passing cases of canned food stuffs from what once was a grocery store.

TWINS HAVE TWIN JOBS
OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. (AP)
Little town all over the country have small two-panel telephone switchboards, but how many have twin sisters to operate them?
The twins who answer your calls here are Mrs. Laura May St. John and Mrs. Willie Lee Locke. They are as close to each other now as they were when they were carrying dolls.
For 24 hours a day these "hello" girl twins live, eat and work together. They'll tell you their arrangement is the best in the world—for grown-up twins, anyway.
Of the money received by the federal government from leased oil wells and mines, 37½ per cent goes to the states where they are located.

Meet JOE SHUMAN ...
YOUR STORE MANAGER
The saying goes: "Ask Joe, he knows." And we're sure they were speaking of our Joe Shuman — because here's a Joe that really knows his appliances. Joe has been an Anaheimer for two years now and was manager for REINHARDT'S at this same location for those two years. To his many friends we extend an invitation to come in and say 'hello' and to you who have never met him, come in and "Ask Joe — he knows!"
