With 97,000 individual stockholders, it's one of the most widely owned companies in the West...and more than 70% of these people are small stockholders with less than 100 shares. Among the large stockholders, you'll find literally hundreds of companies and organizations which work for you or benefit you every day—hospitals, universities, museums, churches, insurance companies, YMCA groups, research laboratories. And, of course, thousands of our employees are also owners. Standard of California profits, therefore, are divided among a tremendous number of people. Will the organization handling your products fruit give you the best possible returns this year and in the years just ahead? Are you really getting the best possible deal, or does it only appear, best because of a good return on one or two products? You need to know. Your decision may vitally affect your future income. How to judge a products operation There are 4 ways to determine what kind of job a products operation can do: 1. Can it get all the value out of your fruit, or just part of it? 2. Can it turn your fruit into the products that are bringing the best prices currently? 3. Must you leave part of your return with the owner of the plant as his profit, or will it all come to you? 4. In the case of a cooperative, what investment must you make in order to participate? How the Exchange measures up First—The Exchange has the most complete citrus products plants in the world, the only ones equipped to take out of your fruit everything that can be sold. Other organizations manufacture only a few products. Second—The Exchange products program has been developing for almost 80 years, and throughout that time the watchword has been flexibility. Ample capacity has been provided to divert the fruit to whatever products currently command the best prices. What orange products will bring the best returns this year? In 1951? In 1952? In 1953? Only the Exchange plant has the large capacity and diversified equipment to handle your fruit in the way that will fit of the changing market, a possible return. 14,500 growers work Third—Must you divide your plant owner? The answer of course is no. Usually, when you are an Exchange member and yourself are the plant owner. In all exchange operations every penny above actual costs goes to the cooperating growers. What investment must you make in order to participate? Here the fact that many growers work together in the Exchange makes tremendous difference. Since the orange products operation is long-established and highly developed, the facilities are largely paid for. And because you are the cost of these facilities with 14,500 growers instead of just one or two thousand, our individual investment is small. The frozen orange concentrate facilities now being completed are costing the Exchange a fraction of the cost that must be paid to smaller groups of growers. The most for your entire crop Fresh fruit marketing and supply operations well, the Exchange is equipped to do a better job for you. In every field, large-scale grower operation pays off. Don't be misled by ex-vivant claims. Investigate! We have a method of comparing returns used, not on random "field box comparisons" but on careful figuring that takes into account sizes, quantities and weights. Would you like such a comparison made from your statement? Drop a line today to Felton Downing, Grower Service Division, Sunkist Building, Los Angeles 54, California. An experienced Exchange man will gladly work out comparison for you without obligation. Fruit Growers Exchange DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS DIVISION OF HIGHWAYS: G. T. McCOY, State Highway Engineer.
