Rotarians Told To Think About "Our Problem"
Mr. Mead, manager of the Southern California Edison branch in Long Beach, addressed the Rotarians on Monday. He gave a vigorous talk on “Our Problem” and defined “our problem” as the preservation of our American way of life.
He said that the measure of our progress is the measure of our individual freedom and as such we should look to England and Russia and be thankful for our blessings. He quoted statements made fifteen years ago, that drew irate comments at the time, concerning large housing programs, intensified social security and welfare pensions, and socialized medicine, and pointed out that we now take these things in our stride. This alone shows how far along the road to socialism we have traveled.
Tex Middleton’s son, Louis, brought some of the performers from the Mozart concert schedule for tonight, Thursday, and tomorrow at the high school and teased the club into wanting to hear more. Bob Frailey was presented with a piggy bank for his new daughter.
Ten candidates were selected for next week's election for directors.

supervisors Overrule County Planning Comm.
A zoning policy that attracted county-wide interest last Friday when the county planning commission put a clamp on L. E. Gilmore's expansion of his pie shop at 11th and Bowley streets, New York, was nipped in the bud by county supervisors Tuesday.
The supervisors rejected the commisison’s recommendation regarding Gilmore’s business, and approved his land use permit with no restrictions upon size or number of employees. Supervisors expressed the view there should be no official interference with the size of a busi-ness, as such, and said they hoped more would prosper so that he could hire a dozen employees, or any number.
In another case, the supervisors overruled the planning comission, this time denying a per-ment to Frank Atzet for a chicken chick on Orangethorpe boulevard at Magnolia, near Cypress. The planning commission had applied the application.
Application of W. I. Williams is permitted to establish an oil re-mining plant on Huntington Beach Boulevard at Pine street, Midway City, was held up by the supervisors pending investigation probably until the board meeting April 4. The planning commission approved the application.

Hayride Turns To Hot Seat
Knott's famed berry place at Avena Park, which stresses "atmosphere" in many ways, one of them being a hay ride for bucolic-adored guests, staged an unscheduled touch of atmosphere shortly after 8:30 Monday night.
The haywagon was parked at Eastern and La Palma streets, then some unknown dropped a cigarette stub, or a spark, perhaps to the hay.
The hay burned beautifully and completely and the wagon was arrested somewhat before the volunteer firemen from West Anaheim station could extinguish it.
