Start Improvements for '50 Orange County Fair Opening date of the five-day Orange County Fair is scheduled for August 16, but the fair grounds on the site of the former Santa Ana Army Air base are far from dormant, according to W. F. (Bill) Croddy, director in charge of grounds. Bulldozers are crawling about the base, buildings are being moved, grounds being leveled and seeded, fences being erected, barns being painted and plans being formulated for other improvements for the 1950 spectacle. The 1949 fair was the first held on the 175-acre site obtained for the permanent Orange County Fair. Croddy declared that comparatively little time was available for preparation last year prior to the fair which, in spite of the time shortage, was the largest ever attended in local history. Because of the short notice, not all the elaborate work had been completed which was planned. An early start this year was begun partly through the need and partly through pressure of Orange countians who wish to enter into the fair. Requests have come from all quarters for space to display all types of exhibits. Commercial firms have requested space as well as concessionaires. Result of the demands, Croddy declared, has been an earlier beginning in order to adequately accommodate all those interested in joining the fair. In line with the requests, adequate accommodations had to be made in enlargement of facilities over last year, he explained. Twenty more acres are being added to the 30 used for the fair in 1949. Fencing to encompass the new area is on the order of business. A 43-acre plot of ground to hold 15,000 cars on a turnover basis has been levelled. The parking lot will be lighted for the convenience of those attending the fair during the evening. Trams to carry passengers both from the parking lot and from the main gate will be available free of charge. Three gateways are being made ready for easy entrance and departure without any dead-ends to confuse drivers. Eight acres of additional land has been levelled and seeded in grass as part of the landscaping program. Blacktopping (asphalt) is to laid under the two huge commercial tents which last year operated under the strain of dirt floor. The 10 barns, which will hold 180 horses, are to be painted. Eleven buildings, 20x60 feet, being moved from outside fenced-in area to make accommodations for more school exhibitions. More adequate lighting is being arranged for all parts of the principally in the animal shelter so that all may be viewed with greater convenience, the grower said. "We hope to have the group and buildings in adequate condition months before the fair's sale in order that all who may wish participate can have more convenience and space in which to erate," Croddy declared. Melt butter or margarine skillet and add chopped ginger. Brown chops on each side, add rosemary, bay leaf and half water. Lay raw potato slices each chop, cover and steam low heat for about 45 minutes until chops and potatoes are der. Serves 4. Hawkins, a democrat, submitted amendments to the budget bill reducing the appropriation for the California Centennials Commission from $500,000 to $50,000 and eliminating $100,000 for construction of riding and hiking trails.
