Schedule Boxing Talent Show at Stadium Friday
Thirty four rounds of boxing, with a pair of eight round bouts capping the bill, are on tap for Friday night, March 17 at Hollywood Legion stadium. The whole affair has been designated as a "Talent Show" by Matchmaker Baron Stumme with an eye towards developing a main bouter of the near future.
In one of the eighters it'll be Joe Danos, a newcomer from Denver, against Ben Mendoza, Cucamonga Mexican. They'll mix at 165 pounds. The other eight will be between Irish Jimmy Lydon and Sal Flores, middleweights, who staged a couple of fast fights previously, each gaining the nod once. A six round bout between J. J. Cracknell and Chester Slider is also on the bill. Cracknell is that dandy prospect guilded by Frank Crowley. Slider is a veteran campaigner who should make things interesting for the sharp punching J. J.
Since the show falls on St. Patrick's eve, Irishmen, Cracknel
Spring Football Practice Opens At UCLA School
Spring football practice opened at UCLA this week. Some 80 candidates, including 19 returning lettermen, greeted Coach Red Sanders and his aides Wednesday afternoon, March 15 at Spaulding Field.
Although he's lost many big stars from the 1949 PCC second-place team, Headman Sanders figures he is 25 per cent better off this spring than last year because everybody now is acquainted with his single wing system. Instead of a reconversion job he faces a rebuilding one this year, especially from tackle to tackle where he lost all but one starter.
Only four of the 11 Bruins who started against SC in the 1949 finale are returning, including All-Coast end Bob Wilkinson, guard Bruce MacLachlan, quarterback Dick Short and wingback Howard Hansen.
The Bruins will drill six days a week to start off with, but Coach Sanders has indicated there will be no set schedule followed for the 30 days of spring practice allowed.

Sportsmen Note Current Hunting, Fishing Rules
Current hunting and fishing activities are subject to general regulations for California sportsmen as accorded them by the fish and game division, the division advised recently.
Although there is no closed season on catfish, there are bag limits to be observed. Fifteen pounds and one fish in the round, or eight pounds and one fish dressed are the figures. Minimum size is set at nine inches in Clear Lake, 10 inches in District 22 and no restrictions elsewhere. Night fishing is permitted in District 22, Siskiyou, Shasta, Modoc and Lake counties.
Information regarding additional restrictions upon fishing and hunting activities can be had by calling Anaheim 2207, ANAHEIM GAZETTE.

Since the show falls on St. Patrick's eve, Irishmen Cracknel and Lydon are expected to lure a few customers into the Legion stadium. Lydon halls from county Mayo, Eire. Cracknell is home-grown, of Celtic parentage.
Of the lot, Danos appears to have the best record. Denver Joe has whacked out all of 21 knockouts in 45 bouts and has faced both Don Lee and Vince Foster on two occasions each. He is a mauling roughie who likes to move in close and bang away with both hands, according to manager George W. Pigott.
Four rounders carded for Friday night are as follows: Joel Fisher vs. Nicky Smith, 135 lbs.; Redtop Fisher vs. Sammy Galvan, 135 lbs., and Tiger Snyder vs. Gil Aguillar, 135 lbs.

In addition to placing Bonner and Denny on the first team, the Colonists rated second team honors for Dub Helsing at forward and Ronnie Faulkner at center. UCLA Captures Pacific Coast BB Championship
In two thrill-packed games, UCLA won its first Pacific Coast Conference basketball championship last week against a classy Washington State quintet, 60-58 and 52-49, and Coach John Wooden and his Bruins now have two weeks to get ready for the NCAA Western play-offs at Kansas City on Friday and Saturday, March 24-25.
Three of the four Western play-off berths are filled by Baylor, Brigham Young and UCLA, with the other coveted spot going to the winner of the March 20 play-off between Bradley and Kansas.
The winner and the runner-up of the Western play-offs will go to New York's Madison Square Garden for the NCAA finals on Tuesday, March 28. Holy Cross, North Carolina State and Ohio State are already in the Eastern play-offs set for Thursday and Friday, March 23-24, in the Garden, with the fourth berth still wide open.
In perhaps the most dramatic and thrilling basketball game in UCLA history, the Bruins won the important opening play-off contest in the last two seconds. Ralph Joeeckel, senior forward, let fly with a 45-foot two-handed shot and the ball hit the backboard and swished through the netting to break a 58-58 deadlock as the gun sounded.
UCLA led throughout the first 30 minutes of the opener only to have the surging Cougars tie the ball game up at 43-all with 10 minutes left. The score then seesawed back and forth, with the teams being tied six times before Joeeckel made his unbelievable
Ocean Anglers Show January Boat Increase
Nearly twice as many fishermen as in 1949 took part in January party boat fishing off the California coast, according to the monthly report of the Division of Fish and Game.
Operators of 26 boats reported that 4,173 ocean-going anglers landed an average of five fish each trip. A total of 20,310 fish were caught in the 31-day period.
Best fishing during the month was reported from San Diego, where 856 sportsmen took home 6,640 fish for an average daily haul of nearly eight fish apiece.
The division also revealed last week that San Francisco's Lake Merced has been stocked with 74,000 catchable-sized trout since elimination of rough fish population by chemical treatment last October.
Additional rainbow trout will be added to the city-owned lake before the local angling season opens April 29. The fish and game commission has set a two-a-day bag limit for the 1950 season.
CONVALESCING WITH SPRING
On the convalescent list are Mrs. Wesley Gibson of Ball Road and Mrs. Eleanor Rita Wilson of South West street. Both of these women have been ill for some time and with the advent of spring weather, are feeling greatly improved.
INNER-CITY SHOOT
There will be an inner-city shoot on Sunday, March 26, at the city range. The tentative starting time is 9 o'clock. Shooting will be at fifty yards and fifty meters and all local shooters are urged to attend.

Ikes Want Lake Mathews Open to Public Fishing
Lake Mathews will be opened to public fishing, if the local Izaak Walton League of America has anything to say about it.
Members of the Ikes have been circulating a petition asking that the lake be opened, according to a report made Wednesday, Mar. 15.
The lake is located about 12 or 15 miles southeast of Corona and is part of the Metropolitan Water District.
The Riverside conservation commission and its president C. T. Harvey are sponsoring the action along with John Laughlin, state representative in Riverside county.
Local Ikes are attempting to get the State Ike association to side with them in support of the petition.
Petitions can be signed at Bob Williams Sporting Goods, Wisser's Sporting Goods and Bud Pascal at DuBois and the Paschal garage.
UCLA led throughout the first 30 minutes of the opener only to have the surging Cougars tie the ball game up at 43-all with 10 minutes left. The score then seesawed back and forth, with the teams being tied six times before Joeckel made his unbelievable shot.
The second game was not as dramatic as the first but was equally exciting. The score was tied six times during the game before the Bruins gained a slight edge and maintained it largely because of the superlative defensive work of Joeckel, Alper, Don Seidel, Ray Alba and Paul Saunders. Stanich sat out the second half because of his sprained ankle.
Leading series scorer was Alan Sawyer, whose 27 point total for the two games gave him an all-time scoring record of 700 counters. The lanky Bruin forward thus became the first UCLA cager in history to hit 700. The other top Bruin scorer was Jerry Norman, forward, with a 24-point total with his 16 big markers being high for Friday. Sawyer set the pace Saturday with 16.
WORKDAY FOR RIFLE CLUB
