AUHS to Attend Track Meet at Huntingt’n Beach Anaheim high school will attend the 29th Annual Southern Counties Track and Field Meet next Saturday, March 18. This track meet is held each year on the Huntington Beach high school track; the meet starts at 12:00 noon and runs until 5:00 p.m. Starting in the year 1922, with a field of eight schools, this meet has grown to the second largest high school track and field affair in the state. It is also the oldest high school meet in the state with the exception of the C.I.F., and has gained national fame as being one of the best. Some of the nation’s brightest track and field stars gained their first fame in this meet. Ross Nichols of Huntington Beach, Miller of San Diego, Moeller of San Diego, Kirkpatrick of El Centro, Norman Paul of Santa Ana, and Eddie Morris of Huntington Beach all went on to establish either national interscholastic or national intercollegiate records. Solons to Meet Padres Friday At Ontario Coach Red Kress will attend topnotch ballplayers in the mento Solon lineup today at the La Palma players go to the Padres of San Diego at local park. FISHING AT LAKE HAVESU Mr. and Mrs. Ken Hellyer and Mr. and Mrs. Vic Brown fished at Lake Havesu from March 2 through March 6 and reported wonderful weather and bad fishing. They caught just enough fish for eating. Colonist Sports Activities for 250 Participants Baseball, swimming, tennis, track, and golf sports are well underway at the Anaheim Colonist high school after initial unveiling of the spring sports program recently. An estimated 250 boys are competing in the school’s athletic program, according to Dick Glover, athletic director. The El Segundo Invitation Swim meet will hold preliminaries at the Colonist pool Friday, March 10. The Southern California schools entered will compete against Coach Ralph Kingsbury’s senior A team which has a nucleus of three lettermen to bolster the squad. Tuesday, March 14, Coach Wallin’s varsity and junior varsity baseball coach, will send his charges against Excelsior ball club. Wallen has two lettermen, Joe Bruce and Minfard Dunkin, back for the season. Tennis coach, Bill Cook’s arm swingers will meet Chaffey high school tennis team here Tuesday, March 14. The Chaffey racquetwielders will come up against defending champions of the Sunset league when they tackle the Colonists. Beverly Hills will have its group here to compete against the Anaheim players Wednesday, Fullerton Gets Nat'l Swim Meet The National Junior College swim meet will be held in Fullerton, California, instead of Coffeyville, Kansas, as previously planned. Coffeyville forfeited the honor of having the nationals in their home town, because of no seating arrangements. The attendance at the meets held before has always been overwhelmingly large. Junior colleges from all over the nation will come to southern California for this event. The meet is scheduled to start each night at 8 p.m. on March 30, 31, and April 1. There will be fourteen events spread out over three days. Fullerton is the 1948 and 1949 defending champion. Fullerton will have to give up the privilege of holding the southern California meet here in order to hold the national meet. The southern California classic will be held at the Compton pool on May 4, 5, 6. The Hornets will also be defending champions in this event. O'Sullivan, state adjutant general, announced recently. O'Sullivan said officers wishing to participate in the encampment, which will be held at San Luis Obispo, may apply for temporary active duty through reserve channels prior to May 15. The state of Missouri has large deposits of lead, zinc, coal and clay. UCLA Track, Field Forces Open Season Saturday UCLA's track and field forces, strictly a question-mark team this season, opens its 1950 season this Saturday (March 11) by competing in the 32nd annual Long Beach Relays at the harbor city. Coach Ducky Drake has entered some 60 spikesmen, including both varsity and freshman team candidates, with the hope of getting a good line on his athletes in actual competition. Javelin ace Cy Young will be one of the favorites in his pet event while Bob Watanabe, classy sprinter from Wayne University will be making his debut in a UCLA uniform. The Bruins have an especially strong two-mile relay entry in Jack Miller, Hugh Mitchell, Don Hangen and Fred Beck.
