County Building Shows February Upward Swing
SANTA ANA—Building operations in rural Orange county for February totalled $1,246,101. This is a 21 percent increase over February a year ago, Building Inspector Edward M. Mahl said Friday, March 3.
The total was 21 percent less than the $1,500,000 in valuations for January, which started 1950 off to a good construction year.
Year-to-date total is $2,824,567 in building valuations for 709 permits, according to Mahl. This is $802,000 more than at this time last year.
Almost all construction activity is in the residential field with 155 dwellings for single families and two multiple units accounting for $988,366 of the construction total. Private garages amounted to $42,743 more for 72 units, and 17 foundations were laid for houses moved in from other locations at a valuation of $10,535.
Eight store buildings were authorized for $69,469 and one model unit was authorized at $15,000. Alterations and conversions to stores and residences were authorized during the month at $77,443. Miscellaneous work accounted for the remainder of the total.
Brisk March operations and a definite upsurge during spring months can be expected, according to Mahl.

Auto Custom Club Starts in Anaheim
The first meeting of a new custom car club was held last Tuesday night at the home of Warren Lichtenwalter, meeting to organize a club that will correspond with all laws in the vehicle code, such as defective lights, defective brakes, unsafe mechanical conditions and driving laws.
The last club of this type, the Night Riders, disbanded in 1927.
The new group has eleven members to date, but more have asked to join. As the rules stand now, the prospective member must have a car that is clean throughout, and have a molded trunk or hood. The club will be open for membership to anyone who can qualify to the set rules.
A new name has not been chosen but two names have been suggested; one was to bring back to life the name Night Riders, and the other suggested name was The Fliegers of Anaheim.
The next meeting will be held Tuesday evening, March 21, at 7:30 at the home of Warren Lichtenwalter.

Citrus Authority Retires After 33 Years In Field
SANTA ANA—Clarence P. Wilson, one of the nation's leading authorities on citrus by-products, is retiring after 33 years of work in California and Arizona citrus industry, according to a statement made last week by Paul S. Armstrong, general manager of the California Fruit Growers exchange.
Wilson made valuable contributions to the citrus industry and was instrumental in the development of the exchange products plants, according to Armstrong.
Wilson first came to southern California in 1911 as a staff member of the U.S. Department of Agriculture to organize the fruit and vegetable chemistry laboratory. He devoted much effort toward development of an adequate products research program.
Wilson left the USDA in 1916 to join the staff of the exchange. He is also credited with playing an important role in the American Chemical society. Writings by Wilson on citrus products research are considered of some importance to the field.

Weather, Coal Affect Trend in Orange Market
Unfavorable weather conditions most parts of the east and increasing effects of the continued strike resulted in a lower end in the orange market for the week ending March 4. Total sales were substantially ahead of the previous week but average returns on all sizes and grades were about 30c per box.
Large size oranges, comprising per cent of current shipments, took the largest drop in price. Medium sizes were off slightly less than the big fruit while 288s and 350c per dozen. This accounts for increased interest in the very small unit representing only 11 per cent of current shipments.
The Florida market showed a slight gain as the wholesale trade pressed interest in diminishing supplies of Florida midseason oranges. Florida Valencias now en-ing the market were described, however, as pale with low sugar and only fair juice content and are selling at lower levels than midseason oranges.
The California lemon market had steady under increased sales. And weather has increased the incidence of colds and flu in many areas with epidemics reported in Dallas, Denver and Indianapolis. Special picks and storage of lemons continue well below the figures for past two years.
The orange prorate for the week winning March 5 was set at 950 cents navels and miscellaneous, 25 cents less than the previous week.
Lemon prorate continues un-tated.
