Whittier Five Plays Chapman And Redlands
The Whittier College's basketball squad is pinning its hopes for a mid-spot in the league standings on the tilt with the University of Redlands this week. The Poets engage in a warm-up game with Chapman College Friday night for the loop fray Saturday night.
Locals Seek Indian Win In Finale
Anaheim's Colonists move against the Fullerton Indians Friday night on their home court a bid to share the top rung of the Sunset league with the Saints Santa Ana.
Santa Ana's victory over Newport Harbor wound up the season for the Saints and assured them a crack at the league championship. High scoring Dick Hopkinson of the Saints captured the league individual scoring record, topping the previous high set by Hul Falkner.
Sam Keith's ambitious five hats no difficulty in defeating Fullerton in the first round of play, but stakes are high for Friday night game. If the Colonists down the Indians, a play-off is needed to decide whether the Santa Ana Saints or the Colonists will represent the Sunset league in C.I.F. Both Santa Ana and Anaheim have lost to each other in league play.

Plays Chapman And Redlands
The Whittier College's basketball squad is pinning its hopes for a mid-spot in the league standings on the tilt with the University of Redlands this week. The Poets engage in a warm-up game with Chapman College Friday night for the loop fray Saturday night.
Redland Bulldogs came out on top of a 34-30 score in the first encounter between the two this season which featured a seven-minute stall by Redlands at the first of the game. The Whittier squad bases its hopes on the fact that the last three wins for the Bulldogs have been very close and they have been with mutual opponents which the Whittier team has beaten. Coach Pete Provost will probably start Bob Rosenberger and Ronnie Kreutzberg in the forward spots, Warner Kreutzberg, center and Bill Stanley and Dave Griffiths, guards. Rosenberger and the Kreutzberg brothers are among the league scoring leaders.
Crippled with the loss of Len Craven, regular forward, Coach Aubrey Bonham will probably counter with Dave Mason and Charles Reed, forwards, Larry Snyder, center, and Gordon Pedersen and Dayton Sayer, guards for both of the frays.
Game time for both tilts will be 8:30 p.m. and will be preceded by a J. V. and frosh game respectively.

Winter steelhead trout and salmon fishing ends in all state streams one hour after sunset, February 28. Effective March 1, year-round salmon angling is legal in the Pacific Ocean and all bays except those in Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers east of the
Awards
Winner of the Anaheim Invitation will receive a championship trophy and individual awards. There will be second and third place trophies. All-star awards for the "best" five players will be given. Competent officials will be provided by the Anaheim Recreation department.
Teams desiring to enter the Invitational will be allowed a 10-man roster. No changes will be allowed on the roster after five o'clock the evening of the tournament. A $12 entry fee must be paid also by this deadline. The fee will cover tourney expenses and awards. Rosters must be approved by the director of the league in which a team has been playing and players must have played a minimum of 50 per cent of the league games in which their team was entered to be eligible for tourney play.
Playing time during the game will be two 15-minute halves. In other respects the teams will abide by A.A.U. basketball rules.
Anaheim Recreation department officials request that all entries and fees be in as soon as possible.
Flores Fights Lydon in Legion Semi-Final Friday
Sal Flores, hard-socking Anaheim middleweight, takes on Jimmy Lydon in the six-round semifinal at Hollywood Legion stadium Friday night.
It'll be a rematch for the two fighters and gives the local fighter an opportunity to prove that the punching power he displayed in their last bout when he kayoed Lydon in two minutes of the first round was the real McCoy.
Flores who although showing great promise has developed slowly in his first year of professional boxing. He has been plagued by a tender nose which has been given a going-over in practically every bout he has had.
In the main event at the filmland arena, Elmer Beltz and Babe Herman, a pair of welterweights, go into battle

Shipkey Tops
UCLA Poll
At Halfback
Anaheim's Jerry Shipkey, full-back with the Pittsburg Seals, was chosen as a member of an all-time UCLA football team recently selected by the Bruin alumni.
Other members of the back-field are quarterback Bob Waterfield, an all-pro selection from the Los Angeles Rams, half-back Kenny Washington, great running and passing star of the late 1930s, and Jackie Robinson, Brooklyn Dodger infielder who was voted the National league's most valuable player last season. The two negro stars played together during the 1939 season.
Bruin alumni selections on the line polled Tom Fears, Burr Baldwin and Bob Wilkinson at ends, the latter two tying in number of votes received; Bill Chambers and Jack Finlay at tackle spots; Nate De Francisco and Jack Sommers at guards. Don Paul was chosen at center.
Wilkinson was the only undergraduate player named on the team. He has one season of eligibility left.

Track Teams
Start Drills
Whittier college welcomed the opening of two sports activities on the campus this week as baseball mentor Wallace "Chief" Newman and track and field coach Aubrey Bonham began to ready their charges for their forthcoming respective seasons.
Seven regulars from last year's baseball squad and a host of goodlooking new material will enable coach Newman to field one of the best clubs in the Poet horsehiders' history. The nine will meet U.C.L.A. Friday, March 24, for their second game of the season.
Some 40-odd track and field aspirants answered the call of Coach Bonham. They will prepare for the coming spring dual meet schedule for the Whittier scantilcads. Coach Bonham has a nucleus of 15 men around which he hopes to build a S.C.I.C. championship squad.
