SPORTS Swim Meet Features Nat'l Stars Two diving events will feature the opening of the collegiate swimming season at Fullerton Junior College Friday night, February 17, at 8:00 o'clock. This will be a triangular meet which will bring together University of Southern California, University of California at Los Angeles, and Fullerton Junior College. The following people will perform in the regular diving event: John McCormick from U. S. C., National ranking diver who toured Hawaii, the Philippines, and Australia with Dr. Sammy Lee, Olympic champion, last summer; and Ed Lucitt, former C. I. F. champion who is one of the country's outstanding gymnasts. Fullerton entry will be Hal Coates, top National Junior College diver and favorite to win the National Junior College title in March. Exhibition Diving The exhibition diving event will show three National ranking women divers from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and two additional posed of five regular members to two alternates who may be substituted for the regular players any time. Each competing team of five will bowl three consecutive games on four separate days, making a total of 60 games. Aggregate scores will be sent Veterans Administration in Washington and the winners of the National Bowling Team Championship in each division, as well as the champions of the six designated areas, will be announced by VA Central Office. Awards will be presented by Bowlers Victory Legion to the team placing first, second and third in each of the four divisions in which national competition was established, and for the teams placing first in each of the four divisions in which area competition is established. Poets Battle To Stay Off Bottom Rung WHITTIER — Two conference games this week-end with the Occidental Tigers and the Calte Beavers should well give the Whitier College basketball squad indication of where they will end up this season on the loop ladders. The Poets will have the advantage of their home court for both tilts and will probably need the advantage to get out of the conference basement. Occidental, Calte tech, and Whittier are in a three-day tie for the cellar at present. Oxy has lost the services of two first stringers in forward, Arch Palma and John Reynolds and will be a definite underdog to the Quakers who dumped the Tiger earlier this season. Coach Fred Cady of U.S.C., Olympic Games diving coach, has gathered together a great group of championship diving prospects to challenge Ohio State University as springboard diving school of the country. Women divers from Los Angeles Athletic Club: Juno Stover, 1948 American Olympic team diver; Pat Keller McCormick, National platform champion; and Betty Colvin, Junior National Springboard champion. Men divers from University of Southern California: Jack Roth, National Junior College champion McHugh meet last year; Jerry of, 1949 and winner of the Jimmy Tenny, one of the nation's outstanding candidates for the 1952 Olympic Games at Helsinki. Free-Throw Tournament In Progress As a wind up to the basketball season the Anaheim Recreation department is sponsoring a Free-Throw Tournament open to all comers in the Anaheim school district. The tournament will be open in four divisions: elementary 11 and under, junior high 12, 13 and 14, senior high 15, 16, 17 and the open division 18 and over. The person turning in the greatest number of baskets out of 100 try will be considered winner in his bracket. Trophies will be awarded to the first and second place winners in each of the four brackets. The tournament started February 11 and will continue until February 28. Entrants should see the following people in their areas for competition in the tournament: Den Ames, Broadway playground; Jim Schmidt, Fremont gym; Monday, Thursday evenings and all can quarter horse. A meeting of horse owners will be held at the ranch at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 21, to enter horses in the races. Wheelchair Vets Enter National Bowling Tourney One bowling team of hospitalized veterans in wheelchairs, and one of ambulant hospitalized veterans have been entered in the fourth annual nation-wide telegraphic tournament running February 15 to March 15, according to Special Services Officers at Birmingham Veterans Administration hospital at Van Nuys and the VA Center at West Los Angeles. F. A. Kerr, assistant administrator for VA Special Services, stated in Washington, D. C., today that more than 500 patients in VA hospitals will take part to determine the VA national bowling champions. Three years ago Birmingham won the wheelchair division, and was runner-up the last two years. Name Team Birmingham players this year will include Leo Ladocoeur and Anthony Diaz, each three-year men; Lee Barr, two-year player; and new players Lee Meredith, Julio Rizzuto and Chuck Hellam. The other alternate is yet to be named. VA Center ambulant patient team members have not yet been named. The county will be divided into six areas. Each area will have an opportunity to establish competition in any or all of three tenpin divisions and one duckpin division. Each hospital team will be composed of: Hacker, Rotary ... 138 Crow, Hornets ... 130 E. Bielfield, Cotlers ... 129 G. Since that time the Poets have improved considerably and have somewhat overcome their hot and cold tendency, so the game should rate as a toss-u-long along with Butler at center, To Bowen and Dick Libbey, forward and Jay Montgomery and Bill Coquards, form the Tech probable starters. Coach Aubrey Bonham's charges, winning four of their last six games seem to have found their collective shooting eye boasting near 60 point per game total for the last six tilts. Probable starters for Bonham's Quakers will be Charles Reed and Leonard Carven at forwards, Larry Snyder at center, and Dayton Sayer and Gordon Pedersen at the guard slot. Gametime for both tilts is 8:30 p.m. and both will be preceded by a frosh game. Probable start-the Bengals will be high Rifle Club Work-Day February 19 Associated Rifle Club will hold an all day work-day on Sunday, February 19 (next Sunday) at the new city range with the hope of completing the range on that day. The women will provide refreshments so no one will have an excuse to slack off on the work. The Rifle club is anxious to complete this range in order to begin inter-city matches. Mobile X-Ray Unit at AUHS Friday Morning Students and special groups throughout the county are being X-rayed this week by the Mobile Chest X-Ray Unit of the Orange County Tuberculosis and Health Association, TB Association officials announced today. The following schedule is being followed: Thursday a.m. February 16, Santa Ana Junior college; Thursday p.m. Shaffer Tool Works, Brea; Friday, February 17, Anaheim high school; Monday, February 26, Orange Coast college; Tuesday a.m., February 21, Tustin high school; Tuesday p.m., La Habra. The special groups being X-rayed are junior college freshman, juniors and seniors in the high schools, non-certificated school personnel and others in these communities who wish to have their chests X-rayed. Vandeveer of the telephone company's public information office in Los Angeles tell about the new "co-axial cable," at the meeting last Friday. This new co-axial cable is now in existence between Los An-geles and New York, but is not perfected for the job that eventually do. It will train several hundred telephone conversions as well as televisions one time. Robert J. Expand Exchange Lemon Processing Plant at Corona The lemon processing plant of the Exchange Lemon Products Company of Corona is expanding its facilities to meet the constantly increasing demand for lemon juice products. This announcement was made today by Howard Hall, manager of the cooperative processing plant, following the action of the board of directors in approving the expansion program. “This expansion is being undertaken to enable us to increase our production of the high-level juice products which offer the highest possible return to lemon growers,” Hall stated. The demand for these products, which has been increasing for the past several years, reached its highest peak in 1948-49. In announcing the enlargement of plant facilities, Hall also stated that an intensive merchandising and advertising campaign is being readied for lemon juice products. The campaign is scheduled to get underway in selected markets in March and will be followed by similar campaigns state-by-state until the program reaches a national scope. Choice of music is left to the discretion of the director, each group being cautioned to select material within the capabilities of their own group. Each band and orchestra will play three previously rehearsed numbers. Solos and ensemble groups may play one number with a maximum time limit set at six minutes while the maximum time limit allowed each organization will be 30 minutes.
