Gray, Silver King of Cowboys Dies Friday Gene Gray, famous southern California horseman, died February 10, thus ending the careers of the Silver King of the Cowboys. He was one of the outstanding horsemen to appear in the 1949 grand parade of the Anaheim Halloween festival and rode his handsome palomino, Don Juaquin, who headed the funeral parade on Monday. The blond horse was covered from eartips to fetlocks and from nose to tail with a heavy black velvet shroud blanket decorated with white felt stars. He was weighted down by an estimated $50,000 worth of silver saddle, bridle trappings and cowboy boots turned backward in the stirrups. Mr. Gray accompanied Sheriff Biscailuz for years in civic parades. He died very suddenly, having rehearsed for a television show on Thursday and was found dead in bed on Friday morning by his wife, Mrs. Dixie Gray, his only survivor. His pallbearers were: Tex Cooper, Hoot Gibson, Bill Hopper, Francis Scott, Lucky Carson and Grant H. Malcolmson. Honorary pallbearers were: Sheriff Biscailuz, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Bill Boyd, Jack Dempsey, Monte Stone, Death Valley Mack and C. J. Aulick, Sr. Services were held in the Armstrong Mortuary at 1201 South Hope street, Los Angeles, and burial was in Inglewood Park Cemetery. The Reverend Marvin A. Johnson officiated and Stephen Kemalyan sang "Empty Saddles." Unemployed Claims Filed in Santa Ana Total 4,633 SACRAMENTO (WNS)—Unemployment insurance claims jumped to 340,227 for the week ending February 2, the State Department of Employment reported today. Claims filed in the Santa Ana office totaled 4,633, and of this total, 3,477 claims were paid. The department paid 258,734 of the total claims filed during the week, as compared to 256,538 for the same week a year ago. The claims filed for the corresponding week a year ago were 317,030. TOMAHFORNIANS TO HOLD ANNUAL REUNION Tomahfornians will hold their 27th annual reunion and picnic on February 19 at 12:30 noon at the Ebell clubhouse in Anaheim. Chairman Lester Van Tail of the Democratic county committee will preside over meeting.
