Social and Club Activities Jeannine Jahns—Phone 2206 Past Ebell Presidents Are Luncheon Guests On Monday the senior Ebell group honored past presidents at luncheon at which each honoree gave a minute speech resume of her year in office. Past officers present were: Mesdames Catherine Dyer, Esther Chamberlain, Lita Smith, Catherine Adams, Ruth Harbeson, Nellie Harpster, Juanita Ross, Mae Nabors, Lena Jane Friis, Cora Webb, Sally Brown, Margie Weisel, Opal Young, Lenore Hoskins, Mary Demaree, Merle Van Wagner, Lucille Wilson, Helen Saulsberry and Celia Bonney. Frances Nash Donovan of New York stage fame gave dramatic recreations of stage successes. Hearts, Flowers Ball to Benefit Children’s Home On Friday evening the Balboa Bay Club will be setting for the first annual ball to benefit the Children's Home Society. This "Hearts and Flowers Ball," as it is being so appropriately called due to the proximity to Valentine's Day, is being sponsored by the Santa Ana and Newport Harbor Among the Anaheim people who will be present are: Dr. and Mrs. L. E. Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Reuben P. Hughes, Mr. and Mrs. Earle T. Jackson, Dr. and Mrs. John A. Wood. Garden Grove will be represented by Mr. and Mrs. M. D. Lindsay. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hopkins will be there from Brea and from Fullerton, Dr. and Mrs. Samuel Gendel. VFW Auxiliary Plans Guest Night Mrs. Opal Walter, district chaplain for the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, instituted a new auxiliary recently at Sylmar, California. On February 12 there will be an all-day district meeting in Santa Ana at which the department president, Marie Krugow, of Tracy, California, will be present. Mrs. Krugow will be on an official tour of inspection. The auxiliary has designated February 13 as guest night and have invited officers from other auxiliaries to be their guests at their business meeting and to join in refreshments and a social hour later. Toastmasters Prepare for master's International and parish president of the Anaheim Toastmasters was the grammarian Marion Pickel served as evaluator. El Toro non-commissioned officer's club and the Anaheim club will hold a speak-off in the near future and the winner will go to the area speak-off at Huntington Beach on April 10. The area speak-off will be ladies' night. Carl A. Miller, a new member was welcomed. Kenneth Nolan Addresses Jr. Ebell The Anaheim Junior Ebell met at the Ebell club house on Tuesday evening to hear Kenneth Nolan of Riverside, speak on "The Youth of Europe—Wartime and Now." Mr. Nolan has spent much time lecturing and traveling through Europe, visiting at youth hostels thus he is still wedging his college education in during his spare moments. He is registered at Redlands University at present. A vivid description of juvenile conditions all over Europe and how the children are suffering the consequences of the war instigated by their parents, was graphically related. Tea hour followed the lecture the tables decorated in the Valentine motif with pink camelias and lacy valentines. A box social auction supper will be the highlight of the square dancing section which meets February 14. VFW Plans For Spring The Veterans of Foreign Wars met on February 2 in the new clubhouse at 106 N. Philadelphia street for a stated business session. The post voted to share half the expenses with the Ladies' Auxiliary of the VFW on the purchase of a hospital bed for the Anaheim... The auxiliaries have provided a reliable adoption service for California, a badly needed service. The decorations for the ball have been designed by Lyell Buttermore of Corona del Mar and Mrs. John Scelsa of Costa Mesa, and will have hearts and flowers effectively used throughout the Bay club. Mrs. Harry E. Teter of Santa Ana is the ball chairman, and has announced that, in addition to the regular Bay club orchestra, the Bob Swain quartet will entertain. Nino, of caricature fame, will be present to make personality sketches of the guests. Toastmasters Prepare for Area Speak-Off The Toastmasters’ club met on Monday evening at La Palma Grill with president Ken Heuler presiding. The invocation was given by Marion Pickel and the table topic, “New Bill of Equal Rights for Women,” was handled by Don Butka. The toastmaster of the evening was Louis Taylor. The first speaker of the evening was C. J. Stillson and his topic was “Life's Testing Grounds.” Ed Wright was his critic and he won the Optimist trophy. Don Dunkin was the second speaker on “The Chinchilla.” R. H. Allen was his critic. Page Vincent’s talk was entitled “Boy Scouts” with critic Marion Pickel and he was awarded the Patterson trophy. Plans were made to hold a joint installation with the Ladies’ Auxiliary the first week in April. The Hoover Report was discussed and recommendations will be sent to our Congressmen in Washington. The hospital committee reported that Ernest Richards, Jr., is in Long Beach Naval hospital with a broken hip. Visiting comrades took cigarettes and magazines to him last Sunday. Godfrey Poetz returned to Birmingham general hospital last week. Refreshments were prepared by Frank Moreno. Orange County Institute Hears Mrs. Erma Pixley The Orange County Institute met on February 7, in the Fremont school auditorium to hear Mrs. Erma Pixley, supervisor of moral and spiritual education, curriculum division, Los Angeles City Board of Education, talk on “Moral and Spiritual Values in Education.” The meeting was sponsored by the Gamma and Rho chapters of Delta Kappa Gamma and county school offices. Teachers from all over Orange county were present. The Institute will meet again on February 16 at the Anaheim Union high school to hear Harol R. Douglass, director of the college of education at the University of Colorado. Dr. Douglass’ topic will be “A High School Curriculum to Meet Today's Needs.” Lions Welcome Transfers, New Members, Guests Sam Hilgenfeld inducted five new members into the Lions club on Friday. Elder, hydrographic engineer of the metropolitan water district who spoke on the "Metropolitan Water Situation and the Fight between Arizona and California." Sam Lyons, president of the Santa Ana Lions, and fifteen of his Santa Ana cohorts were guests of the Anaheim chapter. IOOF Plans Carnival Feb. 25 Anaheim Lodge No. 199 IOOF had a stated business meeting on Tuesday evening at which plans were discussed for the Carnival to be held February 25 in the IOOF Hall. A. W. Kruse, senior, was installed as the new Noble Grand and visitations to other lodges were planned for the near future. Lois Rebekah Install Officers Ellene Callor presided over her first meeting as noble grand at Lois Rebekah Lodge on Friday evening. The meeting was primarily a reception for all new officers and when refreshments were served after a gracious welcome from the new noble grand, all the officers were at the table. The reception was in charge of Lola Compton and Margaret Myers. The program was arranged by Mildred Fitz and presented Janet Schacht reading "Little Pitchers Have Big Ears;" Frances Cowan playing two piano solos and then accompanying Marilyn Miller singing "Dream" and "Desert Song." Refreshments were served by Katherine Cook, chairman; Charlotte Maxon, Olive Fergus, Vernie Summers and Esther Dugan. The next meeting on February 17 will be the official visit of the district deputy president and will also be a Valentine party. Hula Dances for Stanton Lions Val Moore presented eight of her pupils at Ladies' night of the Stanton Lions' club in the banquet room at Knott's Berry Farm on Monday evening. It was a thirty-minute program of modern and ancient Hawaiian dances featuring two fluorescent lighting numbers. Participating were Haze L. Bettie Schachner of Buena Dolores Pool of Anaheim, Daniels of Placentia, Aileen of Olive, LeRay Williamson Westminster and Mary and Rouland of Anaheim. Woman's Medical Auxiliary Meets The Woman's Auxiliary to the Orange County Medical Associa- tion met Tuesday at the San Ana Community Center. The business meeting was followed by a one-act play by the Community Players after which tea was served to members and guests. Mrs. Raymond T. Wayland of San Jose, state president of the Woman's Auxiliary to the California Medical Association, was the honored guest.
