SPORTS Whittier Takes On Loyola and Pasadena Cagers WHITTIER—Fresh from a decisive win over Occidental College, the Whittier College basketball squad meet the Loyola University and Pasadena Nazarene fives in non-conference tilt, Friday and Saturday nights, respectively. Traveling to Loyola Friday, the Poets will be definite underdogs to Coach "Scotty" MacDonald's Lion cagers; San Diego State, the only mutual opponent to Loyola and the Quakers, were beaten twice by the Lions while Whittier dropped two to the border squad. High-scoring forwards Billy Donovan and John Arndt, sparkplugs of the Loyolans, will be backed by Center Earl Stahl, and guards Giola and Bob Wade as probable starters for the Whittier tilt. Playing on their home floor will be the only Poet advantage in the Nazarene fray. Basis for giving the edge to the Pasadenans are the two overtime games with the University of Redlands, current S.C.I.C. casaba leaders. The Pasadena College squad dropped the first game to the Bulldogs, 51-45, but came back to take the second 61-60. Probable starting Nazarene five will be Bob Davis and Bill Boggs. Giants Plan Big Baseball Camp Here The spring schedule of try-out camps sponsored by the New York Giants will include three-day sessions at Azusa and Oceanside, and a two-day camp at Anaheim, announces Micky Shader, Giants western scout. The Anaheim camp is slated for February 8 and 9; the Azusa trials are planned for February 10, 11, and 12; and the Oceanside work-outs will be held February 14, 15, and 16. The camps will be conducted by Shader and Tom Heath, manager of the Minneapolis club of the American Association. Shader's career in baseball started 39 years ago; he was a minor league pitcher for 18 years and has been connected with the San Francisco Seals, the Cincinnati Reds and the Giants for the past 21 years as a farm manager and scout. Heath, who established his mark as one of the best catchers in the business during his playing days, was manager of the Trenton, New Jersey, club before taking over the reins of the Minneapolis Millers, the top farm outfit in the Giant chain. No Fees The camps are open without charge to any boys who are eligible to sign a contract and who... Playing on their home floor will be the only Poet advantage in the Nazarene fray. Basis for giving the edge to the Pasadenans are the two overtime games with the University of Redlands, current S.C.I.C. casaba leaders. The Pasadena College squad dropped the first game to the Bulldogs, 51-45, but came back to take the second 61-50. Probable starting Nazarene five will be Bob Davis and Bill Bogdanoff, forwards, Dave Whitcomb at center, and Jim Jandreau and Ed-Davis at the guard spots. Whittier College cage mentor, Aubrey Bonham, may have found the long needed scoring punch in Larry Snyder, center, who hit for 20 points in the Oxy game. The Oxy win was the first conference victory for the Poets this season and still gives them a mathematical chance at their fourth straight S.C.I.C. championship. Probable starting five for the Quakers for both tilts will be Charlie Reed and Leonard Craven in the forward slots, Larry Snyder at center, and Captain Gordon Pedersen and Dayton Sayer holding down the guard posts. Game time for the two frays is 8:15 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday. A fresh game will precede both varsity tussles at 6:45 p.m. Twenty-five full-time trappers and hunters are employed by the California division of fish and game to reduce the numbers of predatory animals which prey upon game birds and animals. Shark meat is as palatable and nutritious as any other popular species of ocean fish, says the California division of fish and game. The camps are open without charge to any boys who are eligible to sign a contract and who want to try to break into organized baseball, says Shader. Players must pay their own expenses to and from the cite of the tryouts, and must bring their own uniforms and gloves. The camp provides bats and balls. Every candidate who shows up for camp will be allowed to participate in the 20 innings of baseball that will be played each day. “If time permits, Heath and I will also give individual instruction to players,” Shader reports. “This is the third year for Giant try-outs in the west, and we've made some valuable contacts; have given some helpful advice to kids who want to break into professional baseball, and have started several young men on their way to the top in the big leagues.” Wardens of the California division of fish and game make an average of one arrest every 50 minutes of the day and night for violations of the fish and game code. Sportsmen who hunted and fished in 1948 spent $10,000,000 more than the combined total of expenditures for bowling, golf, skiing and motor boating. DON'T BE PUZZLED! For the first time in its three-year history, the annual Hot Rod and Motor Sports Show at the National Guard Armory, Exposition Park Jan. 26 through 29, will have a special boat division in which these hot "aquatic" rods will be on display. Mighty mites of the deep, these small compact yachts are capable returning up as much as 30 miles per hour, or knots if you prefer, according to Robert M. Barsky, managing director of the event. Onboards and outboards equipped with sea-going power plants that rival those found under hot hoods will keynote the divisional leading "shingle sailors" will be hand to demonstrate the tricky parts of this daring new sport as well as pass on information both technical and artistic about the keek boats. Several organizations of speed-skating owners have grown up in the Southland and the sport has been divided into several classifications such in the same manner as hot riding has been. Engine displacement and horsepower mean as much to the sailors as to the landlubbers. The show is scheduled for the story in Exposition Park Jan. 26 through 29 and is sponsored by Russetta Timing Association. Ritz Cleaners, currently sitting on the top rung of the city league, will find playing from a wheel chair more involved than the usual cage game. The vets employ a blocking defense—maneuvering their chairs in front of opposing players, thus screening their sharpshooters who set and sink them from all angles. In a curtain-raiser contest, the Colonist Alumni team will face the Varsity, starting at 7:30 p.m. The featured game starts at 8:30 p.m. Admission to the game is by donation according to Ralph Spencer, of the 20-30 club, sponsors of this year's Dimes campaign. Tickets may be purchased from the 20-30 club members or at the door, he said. Colonists in Crucial Cage Contest Fri. Sammy Keith's aspiring Colonist cagers take the Sunset league spotlight Friday night as they do battle with the Fullerton Indians in a contest which will decide who shall give chase to the high-flying Santa Ana Saints. Bruins Start Football Drills March 15 March 15 has been announced Henry (Red) Sanders UCLA football headman, as the opening date of the 1950 spring gridiron practice. Coach Sanders plans to drill the Bruins six days a week, with the annual spring game slated for Saturday, May 6. Practice, however, will not end on May 6 as one off is planned for mid-term examinations. Indications are that Sanders and staff have 30 days of rugged drills in store for Bruin football hopefuls. Meanwhile, it was released that LA will play Wisconsin in the Los Angeles Coliseum on October 15th. The Bruins have already tied the Badgers for an Oct. 25 contest. Sammy Keith’s aspiring Colonist cagers take the Sunset league spotlight Friday night as they do battle with the Fullerton Indians in a contest which will decide who shall give chase to the high-flying Santa Ana Saints. Deadlocked in second place with four wins and a single loss apiece, the two teams have both fell to the onslaught of the Saints. However the Colonists still maintain they succumbed to the whims of a fickle referee who couldn’t decide when he had toooted his whistle. Keith has been using two teams and in contests with Orange and Downey used three squads indicating he isn’t bent on setting any league scoring records. His philosophy has been a win is a win, regardless of the score. Thus it appears that comparative scores as far as the locals are concerned goes for naught. Fullerton is a strong defensive team, holding the Saints to their lowest score to-date. However they will meet their equal in Anaheim who at present are the top defensive team in the league. And they haven’t done too badly in the scoring department either having scored 216 points in five contests placing second behind Santa Ana. The Indians have a real scoring threat in Staggs who in Tuesday’s game with Downey dumped in 23 points. He’ll be at his best Friday with the familiar peach baskets of his own home court being the targets. Playing an outstanding game for the locals in recent games has been Joe Bruce, alternating at center with Ronnie Faulkner.
