Speakers Plan Carnival Night Attired in gaudy costumes, Anaheim Toastmasters will stage a carnival night next Monday evening during the regular dinner-meeting at La Palma Grill, it was announced today. Speakers to appear in carnival garb for the event will include C. O. Garshwiler, Page Vincent, Ken Heuler and W. E. Dixon, Jr. Each will enact a character in carnival life. Marion Pickell will act as master of ceremonies; Louis Taylor, evaluator, and Fred Rusch, table topic master. A second debate on "Should the United States Give Aid to Nationalist China at Formosa?" highlighted last week's dinner-session. H. R. Allen acted as moderator while John Knutzen and Aubrey Van Verst, affirmative speakers, took winning honors over the negative debaters, Louis Taylor and Don Butka. Four minute speeches with two minute rebuttals were featured. The subject was opened to forum discussion following the formal debate. Vice-president Marion Pickel presided over the meeting. The invocation was given by John Knutzen. Two guests, Carl Miller and A. F. Habener, both of Anaheim, were introduced. Dr. Quenton Ressler, table topic master presented the subject "Vocabulary Words and Their Definitions" following the pattern used by Haven McQuarrie on the "Noah Webster Says" radio program. Don Butka acted the role of the profesor who handles the network show's dictionary. Dr. Ressler was both time keeper and grammarian. General evaluator was Chauncey Stillson. Local Lions at Big Conclave Heading a delegation of Anaheim Lions at the District 4 mid-winter convention at Santa Barbara, Thursday afternoon through Saturday morning was Joe Citchfield, president of the local club. More than 1600 Lions, some accompanied by their wives, from clubs throughout California and Nevada attended the conclave. Those in Critchfield's party included secretary Vic LaMont, Sr., Dr. and Mrs. John Boege, Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Beebe, and Leavitt Ford, immediate past president of the Anaheim club. Convention participants resided at the Mar Monte hotel. All meetings were held at the Fox Arlington Theater where international President Walter Fisher of Queenson, Ontario, Canada, was main Friday morning speaker and R. Roy Keaton of Chicago, assistant secretary general, was Friday afternoon speaker. Aid to the blind and sight conservation, chief philanthropies of Lions International, headed the business discussions. Organizational work was also discussed. B. J. Valentine Laid to Rest Monday Benjamin J. Valentine, 71 years of age, passed away at Orange county hospital on Monday, January 23. A native of New Jersey, he had resided in Cypress since 1911 making his home at 8627 South Walker street. Surviving are a niece, Mrs. Dorris Mayhall of Cypress, and two nephews, Robert Valentine and Cypress, and Gilmer Valentine Anaheim. Private funeral services were held Wednesday morning at No'clock at Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars chapel with the Rev Howard S. Congdon, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, officialing. Interment was in Olive Law cemetery. KOPFER FAMILY ENJOYS VISIT HERE The Rev. Robert Richardson of National City, son-in-law of Mrs. E. G. Kopfer of Encinitas enjoyed the hospitality of Mrs. C. Cleveland and her sister 10352 West Broadway, this city last Thursday. The Kopfer couple joined their son Ross, well known Anaheim barber, for luncheon during their impromptu visit. Forum Audience To Hear Report On Russia Today Firsthand, from-the-spot word-pictures of what is happening in Russia and the present frame of mind of the German people will be offered Thursday night by a distinguished traveler-corrrespondent, John Scott, to a Fullerton Forum audience at the high school auditorium, it was announced by Walter Pray, moderator. The program is open to the public free of charge. Scott's thrilling accounts of "Freedom or Slavery in Europe" are based on many years of residence in the old world, as a college-trained worker in Magnitogorsk; a correspondent in Moscow, in Paris, in Stockholm; an informed traveler through Germany and South Central Europe. Lived in Russia Frish from the University of Wisconsin, he succumbed to the urge of finding out more about Soviet Russia. Living and tolling with workers in a steel and chemical center in the Urals, he eventually married a Russian girl; he wrote reports from Moscow in 1937, from Paris in 1939; he studied Hitler's rise to power from close range. Many of the historic events leading to World War II are a part of Scott's life, as was his coverage of the unsuccessful Anglo-Franco-Soviet meeting in Moscow, the about-face friendship of Stalin and Hitler, the Russo-Finnish war of 1939-40. Expelled Only a few days before the surprise German attack on Russia, Scott was expelled from the Soviet Union for dispatching news too truthful for censors' liking. Returning by way of Japan, he arrived in Honolulu by the last Trans-Pacific Japanese liner before that country recalled her ships from American waters. John Scott covered World War II as corerspondent of Life magazine from Stockholm, and more recently he toured occupied Germany as chief of Time magazine's staff in Europe. His report to the Fullerton audience will be richly endowed with background experiences from exciting world events of the recent past and the immediate present. Davis Lake to Ballman's Jan. Davis Lake to Provide Top Trout Fishing Fish biologists forecast that the Davis Lake and dam, now being filled will provide the best trout fishing on the west coast, according to Bob Williams, local sporting goods store owner, who just returned from a week's tour of the project. Located between Boulder Dam (Lake Mead) and Lake Havesu, Davis Dam, when completed, will be 67 miles long and from one-half to five miles wide, said Williams who returned here Monday with John Mary, Sr., of this city and Jack Hatfield of Glendale, mormerly of Anaheim. The trio who journeyed to the project via Williams' car and trailer plus boat, went 21 miles up the new lake. All the river camps are being moved to higher ground to make way for the rising lake waters. To be open to anglers twelve months a year, Davis Lake is expected to be stocked with trout by three states, California, Arizona and Nevada. The Williams party returned here Monday with a nice catch of trout. Largest fish taken was a 15-inch rainbow.
