1950 Marks New Era for California
By EARL G. WATERS
Western News Service
Sacramento—Just as 1950 marks the turn of the century so too does it mark a new political era for California.
For this is the year of the Federal Census which will result in the Golden State attaining a ranking place among the states of the nation.
Under a census count it is predicted California will become second to New York in point of Congressional representatives and presidential electors.
This is a long way from 100 years ago when this state ranked 30th in a nation of 33 states.
Recognition
In the national picture this means California will have much more to say than it has previously. Henceforth no candidate for president will be selected without cautious solicitation of California's feelings in the matter. Further, future legislation by Congress will not, as it often has been in the past, be enacted with never a thought for the West.
Directly connected with 1950 and the new census will be the political futures of many present leaders of both parties.
For following the census the political future is wrapped up in 1950 so also is that of governor Earl Warren's.
For if Warren is a successful candidate for re-election in 1950 he will become the only man in history to be elected governor of California three times. Further he will be the only man in the memory of persons born in this century to defeat the magic of Roosevelt.
These facts, plus the substantial voice California will have in naming the presidential nominees would make Warren's selection by republican convention almost certainty.
Not Too Late To Send Xmas Seal Checks
“It’s not too late to send returns for Christmas Seals,” said Harry L. Hanson, chairman of the Christmas Seal sale of the Orange County Tuberculosis and Health Association, today.
“To date only 50 per cent of the persons who received Christmas Seals in the mail have paid for or returned their Seals. This year, more than ever before, everyones’ help is needed to insure the lifegiving services which will help eradicate this disease,” Hanson said.
“Christmas Seal returns help to protect every citizen of Orange county. With the knowledge that
means California will have much more to say than it has previously.
For following the census the California legislature must reapportion its present congressional and assembly districts.
Ten years ago recalcitrant democrats formed a coalition with republicans in the state legislature which resulted in reapportioning the democrats right out of their majority control of the lower house. Not since that time have the democrats been able to win back that advantage.
But a reapportionment this time may spell democratic majorities for the democrats in both the legislature and the California congressional delegation.
National Leadership
Should this result the way may be paved for California political leaders to assume much greater stature in the nation. Certainly it would mean many of the present leaders in the legislature would find their way into national affairs.
Linked to these possibilities are the futures of gubernatorial aspirant James Roosevelt and state democratic chairman Oliver J. Carter. Should Roosevelt win the governorship this year it may send him on to national prominence just as his father's election as New York governor catapulted him into the presidency.
To date only 50 per cent of the persons who received Christmas Seals in the mail have paid for or returned their Seals. This year, more than ever before, everyones' help is needed to insure the lifegiving services which will help eradicate this disease," Hanson said.
"Christmas Seal returns help to protect every citizen of Orange county. With the knowledge that tuberculosis can be wiped out in 10 years and Orange county taxpayers can reduce and eliminate the half million dollar expense of TB, it behooves everyone to make an all out effort to aid this program," he stated.
With only $30,031.93 received to date, the TB Association is reminding Seal recipients by mail that Seal returns can still be made to help reach the $37,000 goal. The funds will be used for additional x-rays in areas of high tuberculosis incidence, as well as schools, communities and industry; an extended information service; vocational rehabilitation and other services to TB patients; research; pioneering of new techniques in information, control and other services.
