AT PENNEY'S IN ANAHEIM A WORLD OF THRIFTY GIFTS SOCIETY and CLUB ACTIVITIES (Continued from Page 3) "Accuracy of observation," Mr. Farquhar writes in his Introduction, "coupled with his devotion to truth, gives to Brewer's letters unusual historical value." The book was originally published by the Yale University Press in 1930. Employees of Penney’s Receive Special Checks The board of directors of the J. C. Penney company have authorized a special payment of an amount equal to two weeks pay for all full-time associates who have been employed for the full year of 1949 and on a proportionate basis for extra and part-time associates and for those employed less than a year. All Penny associates throughout the company share in this payment except those who are members of the management staff and whose earnings are determined largely by the company's long-standing-profit-sharing plan. 65 Anaheim Associates Oscar Solter, manager of the J. C. Penny Company store said that more than 50,000 Penny associates all over the United States will participate in this payment, including 65 of the Anaheim store. He further emphasized that this was not a Christmas bonus. Einstein; "The Complete Canasta," Ralph Michaels and Charles H. Penny Company store said that more than 50,000 Penny associates all over the United States will participate in this payment, including 65 of the Anaheim store. He further emphasized that this was not a Christmas bonus in the usual sense and was non-recurring. The company some years ago substituted a thrift and profit-sharing plan for the more usual Christmas bonus and into this plan is annually paid a proportionate share of company earnings. The current extra payment, just announced, is additional to these thrift and profit-sharing benefits. Employees of the Anaheim store received their special payment checks at the store's annual Christmas party held at the Elks Club, Friday evening, December 18. Santa Visits Toastmasters Jovial in full regalia, Santa Claus made a surprise visit to members of the Anaheim Toastmaster club Monday evening at La Palma Grill. Taking charge of the gift exchange, Santa required each member to describe the present awarded him in a two minute talk on its qualities and uses. Santa also introduced the speakers of the evening. The well-polished Patterson trophy went to Page Vincent for his description of "An Old-Fashioned Vermont Christmas." For his speech, "The Oldest Christmas," C. O. Garshwiler was awarded the Optimist trophy. Ed Wright spoke on "Deception" and Louis Taylor gave voice to "Pity the Poor Postman." Grammarian was Don Dunkin while Aubrey Van Verst acted as evaluator. Santa made his exit following the speeches. Guests introduced during the dinner were Sydney Pellew, a former member and past president of the club, and Carl Miller. The invocation was given by Earl Smith. President Ken Heuler presided. There will be no meetings for the next two weeks, president Heuler announced. The program chairman will mail out announcements for the January 9 session.
