CALIFORNIA Last Week (Western News Service) The Governor: Was spending most of his time selecting directors for the various water pollution districts created by the legislation authored by Assemblyman Randal F. Dickey aimed at better conservation of California water resources; paused long enough to approve rent decontrol for Coronado, the 12th California city to go off the rent control regulations. The Legislature: Several key spokesmen of both houses made statements indicating the Collier-Burns highway fight of two years ago to raise state gasoline taxes to six cents may be fought all over again the next session. A 1½ cent increase was approved in 1947 to compromise the bitter fight of that year. Present feeling is that new highways cannot be built fast enough to catch up with the evergrowing population. Pete Martinez Taken by Death Pete Martinez, 80, 10922 Chestnut street, Stanton, a native of Mexico who had lived in the United States since 1901, died last Thursday, November 24, at the Orange County hospital.
