Host Southland Gra-Y Pow-Wow
Anaheim was host to the annual southern California Gra-Y Pow-Wow last Saturday, entertaining 837 "friendly Indians" from Orange, Riverside, Los Angeles and San Diego counties.
Topping the day's activity was the impressive "Y" circle with the boys forming three huge concentric circles representing the YMCA's circle of friendship around the world.
Mayor Charles Pearson welcomed the boys in the morning at the high school auditorium. A program of organ music, German band music and an exhibition of tumbling by the Santa Ana Y Tumbling team started the day's festivities.
Rhodes Rule, chairman of Boys' Activities of the Southern California YMCA and Paul Demaree of the local Y addresses the gathering.
Chief Bill West, full-blooded Cherokee Indian, dressed in authentic costume told Indian tales to the large assemblage of friendly Indians.
The morning program concluded with four Disney cartoons and the full-length feature, "So Dear to My Heart."
Following lunch the boys were entertained on the athletic field by Sylvester Braun, local trick-rope artist and his associate who kept the boys in stitches with antics involving his dwarf nule.
Concluding the entertainment was an exhibition of boxing, wrestling, weight lifting and trampoline under the direction of Carl Miller and Bob Golay of the Los Angeles YMCA physical education department.

Veterans May Appeal Denied Disability Claim
The denial of disability compensation or disallowance of service connection is not necessarily the last word in a veteran's claim for Federal benefits to which he may be entitled, according to Cy Feathorne.
CALIFORNIA Last Week
(Western News Service)
The Governor voted by absentee ballot, and announced he had voted for Propositions No. 1, 2, 3, and 12, the only controversial issues on the ballot for November 8; demanded a grand jury investigation of lobbying activities involving George McLain, Los Angeles pension promoter and assemblyman John Evans, of Los Angeles; commented that he does not believe anti-lobbying laws are strong enough; declared that such an investigation is the only way he knows to set at rest rumors, gossip and accusations of lobbying, as he requested that the grand jury not only go into the McLain-Evans matter, but cover the entire scope of lobbying in Sacramento; left for Utah, where he will attend a western governors' conference meeting.
The Legislature: Senator Fred Weybret's interim committee investigates the state social welfare department moved its hearings to Sacramento, and spent some time questioning Mrs. Myrtle Williams, director of the department. She denied accusations that George McLain, whose secretary she formerly was, operates the department by remote control. The committee plans to question McLain after the November election, which will decide the fate of his constitutional amendment reorganizing the department and putting it under Mrs. Williams' supervision.
The Departments: The national guard announced a series of on the ground investigations to determine
Veterans May Appeal Denied Disability Claim
The denial of disability compensation or disallowance of service connection is not necessarily the last word in a veteran's claim for Federal benefits to which he may be entitled, according to Cy Feathery, executive director, Orange County Council American Legion Relief Commission.
Numerous veterans have gone to the Orange County Veterans Service Center, he said, with letters from the Veterans Administration containing an unfavorable decision in their case. In a substantial number of instances, it has been found possible to obtain additional evidence, re-submit the claim, and receive an award.
"The same story applies to the degree of disability that is established." If a veteran believes he is entitled to additional compensation, there is experienced counsel available to him for preparing his case. Don't just sit around and 'gripe' about the findings; if you honestly think you have not had fair treatment, go in and talk it over."
Compensation and pension matters are only a small part of the operation of the Service Center, which also assists veterans and veterans' dependents in obtaining all state and federal benefits made available to them by law. Education and training, medical treatment and hospitalization, National Service life insurance and many other aspects of veterans' benefits are covered. The office at 225 North Broadway is open to veterans and dependents from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The telephone number is KI. 2-3516, ask for receptionist for an appointment, with the claims officer.

Study Sites For $112,000 Anaheim Armory
Sacramento, (WNS)—An on the ground investigation of the need for a National Guard Armory to serve the Anaheim-Fullerton area was announced here.
Assemblyman Richard H. McCollister of Mill Valley, chairman of the assembly military and veterans affairs committee, said committee investigator Lynn S. Coe will make the survey.
He said the state adjutant general Curtis D. O'Sullivan has proposed the construction of an armory at Anaheim at an estimated cost of $112,000.
Both the Fullerton Guard Unit, Co. "M" of the 224th Infantry Regiment, and the Anaheim Unit, Co. "K" of the same regiment would use the armory. The guard is now paying a total of $325 per month rental for quarters for the two units.
McCollister said the investigation will include a study of the need for an armory, strength of the guard units in the area, use the community would make of an armory, and property offers for the armory site.
He said Coe would confer with Lieutenant Guy W. Luzania and Captain Theodore N. Steckler, commanders of the two guard units in the Anaheim area.
A baby son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Pio De Casas, Route 3, Anaheim, Sunday, at Fullerton General Hospital.

The cast-off furniture item will be refinished and repaired at Salvation Army workshops, and then sold in an Army thrift store. Increasing amounts of no-longer-needed furniture and all other commodities will be necessary to operate the Salvation Army self-help program.
