Miscellaneous: James G. Bryant, director of the department of employment told members of the Governor's Council the state expects to have 600,000 unemployed by next March, when he expects the peak of the season's unemployment in the state to be reached; the governor announced to the council his employment conference December 5 and 6, which he said would be devoted to "stimulating the making of jobs." The Departments: Real estate said home building in California will reach the highest peak since 1925, this year, with more than 80 per cent of the homes under construction to be selling for less than $8,000; building and loan reported assets of building and loan companies in California are higher than ever before, having jumped $17,000,000 in the last three months; division of beaches and parks said there was a 30 percent increase in the use of state are still open to veterans or non-veterans, but they are going fast—only one-half left. Citizen-reservists are paid four days in rank per month for training one and one-half days, one week-end a month. November Age. the office of Thomas H. Kuchel state controller, for November age and blind payments total $13,089,286.67, it was announced today. In addition, the Controller sent $137,281.24 to counties for administrative costs. Amount received by Orange The Departments: Real estate said home building in California will reach the highest peak since 1925, this year, with more than 80 per cent of the homes under construction to be selling for less than $8,000; building and loan reported assets of building and loan companies in California are higher than ever before, having jumped $17,000,000 in the last three months; division of beaches and parks said there was a $0 per cent increase in the use of state parks last season. Agriculture: Use of 2-4-D, a new herbicide, was discussed at an all-day hearing, during which proposed rules and restrictions regulating the poison were proposed by the department of agriculture; Senator George Hatfield's interim committee on agriculture met and discussed the possibility of maintaining flying instruction at a recently acquired airport at the Davis College of Agriculture. Authorize Local Expenditure of Liquor Monies Sacramento, (WNS)—A question as to whether the liquor license fees apportioned to cities and counties could be deposited in the general funds and expended for local purposes, was answered in the affirmative today in an opinion rendered by Attorney General Fred N. Howser. The question was put by State Controller Thomas H. Kuchel, in view of a general requirement in the constitution, that "state subventions be spent for state purposes only." Conclusion of the attorney general, however, is to the effect that subventions of liquor license fees received by counties and cities may be deposited in local general funds, and expended for local government purposes, as the "state purpose" requirement is not applicable. “If it be assumed that the legislature is empowered to impose restrictions upon the purposes for which the counties and cities may spend the money,” the opinion read, “the fact is that in this case it has not done so.” Legality of the expenditures, the opinion said, could be classed as an exception to the rule laid down in the constitution. Navy Recruits "If it be assumed that the legislature is empowered to impose restrictions upon the purposes for which the counties and cities may spend the money," the opinion read, "the fact is that in this case it has not done so." Legality of the expenditures, the opinion said, could be classed as an exception to the rule laid down in the constitution. Navy Recruits 341 Reserves at NAS Los Alamitos In its current drive the Naval Air Station, Los Alamitos, has gained 341 recruits in 25 days! One month ago Captain Michael H. Kernodle, commanding officer of the station, led off the campaign by putting out a call for 800 organized reservists to fill that many vacancies available. He also announced to the enlisted men of his command that to each one who brought in one or more recruits, a three day pass would be granted. A team of 14 enlisted recruiters was organized under the leadership of LCDR Roger Crow, holder of the Navy Cross and other combat decorations. The team and active duty personnel of the air station were told to actually get out and ring door bells—make personal contacts. That is exactly what happened and with amazing results. The recruiting office at the base did such a rush business the first week-end that it was forced to move to larger quarters to accommodate the prospective enlistees. With a 72 hour pass foremost in their minds, the stationkeepers accounted for the largest percentage of recruits with 159. The recruiting team followed with a figure of 107, organized reserve members brot in 27 and 48 joined up by other means. Billets of almost all types Here Are a Few of 8 pc. Mahg. CENTER S Larger Oranges Predicted for Coming Season It looks like southern California orange growers will have some fruit of decent size to talk about next season. At least that is the conclusion drawn from a report by the Orange Administrative Committee, which predicts bigger winter Navels and summer Valencias in nearly all growing districts than were actually harvested this year. The outlook for southern California Navels is particularly good, unless Mother Nature throws a curve, there will be little or no fruit of "golf ball" dimension. During the last of September and early part of October, the OAC made random fruit measurement in all districts. The size the Navel would attain by March 15, 1950 based on average growth between now and then, was then predicted. For the southland as a whole Navels should average 225 per box on March 15—113.78 per cent of the actual fruit size of 256 packed box recorded on March 15, 1949. In the Cucamonga-San Dimas-Upland-Pomona area the fruit is expected to be only 1.56 per cent larger than the 259 per box of las March 15. However, in every other district, the size-gain is predicted to be much greater. The greatest increase is projected for the Corona-Riverside section with 205 fruits per box expected against 254 this year. Actually, however, the largest-sized fruit is expected in San Diego county, with an average of 191 per box anticipated, compared to harvested size of 230 this past season. The same general story prevails for next summer's Valenclas, although the increase is not expected to be quite as pronounced as with the winter Navels. For all districts, an average of 301 Valenclas per box is anticipated on July 1, 1950, compared with an actual size of 305 this past July 1. However, sizes are expected to be quite a bit larger next year in all producing areas. Alice R. Hansen Death Thursday Alice R.
