History of Apples Goes Back Centuries Man started early on the job of improving the apples he found growing wild in western Asia and temperate Europe thousands of years ago. More than 20 centuries back, historians show, our ancestors were familiar with methods of budding and grafting fruit. It is said that Cato, in the third century B. C., knew seven different apple varieties, and that Pliny, in the first century A. D., knew 36 different kinds. The U. S. Department of Agriculture says that by the time first settlers were coming to our shores, hundreds of apple varieties were known in European countries. The newcomers to our eastern coast brought seeds with them and, in some cases, grafted trees of European varieties. Apple trees were bearing fruit here within a few years after the first settlements were made in the temperate portions of North America. From these beginnings, the apple spread far and wide in this country. Indians, traders, and missionaries helped to carry apples far beyond the white settlements. John Chapman—the almost legendary Johnny Appleseed—tramped through the frontier country in the early 19th century, starting off chards wherever he went by planting a few apple seeds wherever he stopped to chat with someone. Apples appear in the mythology, traditions, history, and archeology of the most ancient nations. They are mentioned in the Bible. Indeed, King Solomon hailed the apple as a fruit of healing. Could that have been a forerunner of our "an apple a day keeps the doctor away?" State Chamber Takes No Position Of Daylight Saving The California State Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors today voted to take no statewide position on Proposition No. 12, the daylight saving question on the November ballot. Consideration of the measure by the state chamber's six regional councils which preceded the director's action indicated that interest in the measure was so divided that no position should be taken. Early in September the state chamber considered all other ballot measures and supported passage of all propositions except Proposition No. 11. The latter measure is opposed because it was erroneously prepared and can be re-submitted after official correction. The United States Department of Agriculture says the 1949 apple crop is the largest in years; and that the quality, in general, is excellent. Southern Co.
