Church Festival Last Saturday Was Huge Success
Coordination of committees, hard work and a boost from every member brought success to the annual Fall Festival of St. Michael's Episcopal church held last Saturday evening at the Anaheim Union high school gymnasium and cafeteria. Capacity crowds were entertained from the opening hour at 12 o'clock noon until the last booth closed down for the night. Finances derived from this benefit will go into the building fund for the fast growing Sunday school.
Ladies of the church prepared meals for 500 persons and the food was gone early in the evening, leaving a number of persons without the delicious meals of meat loaf or the tamale dinner. Special thanks from the church members go to S. and W. coffee company who furnished, made and served the coffee, Mr. Crumley of Tustin, area representative, in charge, and also to the Excelsior Creamery Company for furnishing a large portion of the milk used. Mr. Crumley was assisted by Paul Yorde, representative of Durkee's Fine Foods.
The grand prizes were presented to Mrs. Charles Mann, the O'Keefe & Merritt gas range, and the watch or gift certificate went to Foster Warwick. Door prizes were presented, these being furnished by Lauretta's Dress Shop, J. C. Penney Company, The S.Q.R. Store, Aaron Schultz Furniture, Singer Sewing Machine Company, Jackson Drug Store, a fine big turkey from Caves Turkey Ranch at 10411 Magnolia avenue, and the following firms in Los Angeles, May Company, Bullock's, Robinson's and Eastern Columbia.
As an incentive to the children of the church, a ticket selling contest was conducted with the Sunday school divided into two

Kick-Off Party Big Success
Four hundred people turned out for the Hallowe'en Kick-Off party last Thursday evening at the Elks club to witness the selection of Miss Slick Chick of 1949; eat at an old-fashioned box lunch social and be treated to some top vaudeville acts.
Miss La Vonne Hart, high school senior, received the judges nod in the Slick Chick contest which this year reached a new high in quality of costumes and adherence to theme.
Larry Blake presented a crowdpleasing impersonation routine with Singing Sam of Kit Kat fame bringing the house down in the final act of the night.
Sam, who appeared through the courtesy of Ben Chmiel, Kit Kat owner, let loose with character-piano selections in an act reminiscent of the days when vaudeville was king.
The success of the evening has virtually assured it becoming an annual affair. Joe Thompson and Hildred Ferrel were co-chairmen of the party and Dorothy Graham was in charge of the Slick Chick contest.
October 22, in the American Legion Hall in that city; the ceremonial to be followed by a barbecue at 6:30 p.m. and later by a stag stage show at 7:30 p.m.
Potentate Sailor is bringing with him the following members of the Al Malaikah divan; Virgil F. Frizzell, chief rabban; William C. Froelich, assistant rabban; Charles T. Reichert, high priest and prophysician to the Scriptures: "Jesus' unchanged physical condition after what seemed to be death was followed by his exaltation above all material conditions; and this exaltation explained his ascension, and revealed unmistakably a probationary and progressive state beyond the grave. Jesus was 'the way,' that is, he marked the way for all men."
Republicans Plan State Confab
"United States Senator William F. Knowland of California will keynote the first full meeting of the Republican State Central Committee since its organization and Lieutenant Governor Goodwin J. Knight will also be a principal speaker," Ed Shattuck, chairman of the state committee, announced today.
The two-day meeting of the Republican state committee is to be held Friday and Saturday, October 21 and 22 in the Palace hotel, San Francisco. On the agenda of the meetings, Chairman Shattuck announced, will be open discussion of the possibility of setting up pre-primary endorsement programs for Congressional and Legislative candidates, plans for the Fresno Convention in April at which all Republican state-wide candidates will be asked to appear, and a report on the recently completed survey which reveals the weak spots throughout the state where an effort will be made to furnish more organizational work and finances in the coming elections.

Plan Celebration Of Stock Exchange 50th Anniversary
Financial and business leaders from every southern California community are making plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Los Angeles stock exchange, the founding of southern California's financial industry. Edwin L. Harbach, general chairman for the observance, said the financial industry has been overwhelmed by the response of the business and civic groups to early announcements of the event (Nov. 15-Dec. 15, 1949).
Libraries, museums, public buildings and business houses are planning anniversary displays and exhibits, the chairman said, and a committee has been established by the exchange to provide speakers for business, civic and service organizations. Actual anniversary date is December 7—Pearl Harbor Day.
Harbach said that other committees have been set up under the direction of prominent financial men to cover every phase of the celebration.
Santa Maria To Be Shrine Capital Saturday

The Santa Maria festivities are to start at 4 p.m. Saturday, Octo-ber 22, in the American Legion Hall in that city; the ceremonial to be followed by a barbecue at 6:30 p.m. and later by a stag stage show at 7:30 p.m.
Potentate Sailor is bringing with him the following members of the Al Malaikah divan; Virgil F. Frizzell, chief rabban; William C. Froelich, assistant rabban; Charles T. Reichert, high priest and prophet; Arch D. Field, oriental guide; William G. Vaughan, first ceremonial master, and Glenn Pearce, second ceremonial master.
Joseph Wade Brignice will be in charge of ceremonial activities. Captain Earl B. Bradley will command the uniformed organizations.
CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
"He that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved." This statement by Jesus from Matthew's Gospel will be the Golden Text of the Sunday Lesson-Sermon on "Probation after Death" in all branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston.
Matthew's account of the resurrection relates that "as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it... And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified... And as they went to tell his disciples, ... Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him."

The service said that harvest of the state's almond crop is well along, and approximately 42,200 tons are indicated this year, as compared to 34,000 tons in 1948.
Harvest of the state's apple crop is continuing, and indications are for 9,296,000 bushels this year. The fig harvest is well advanced and the report said 81 per cent of a full crop will be harvested this year.
The California olive crop is light this year, approximating 42 per cent of a full crop, according to the report.
A total production of 2,767,000 tons of grapes is forecast for the 1949 season, with the harvest well under way. September weather was good for grapes, and shipments of fresh varieties are well ahead of last year.
Forecast for the California walnut crop remains at 73,000 tons, and the Department of Agriculture has issued a marketing order which contemplates 30 per cent of the crop being diverted from regular trade channels.
