SOCIAL AND CLUB ACTIVITIES OF THE WEEK (Continued from Page 4) Faye Kern Schulz Reviews Life Of Lydia E. Pinkham for Altrusa’s Lydia E. Pinkham, a household word of our grandmother's day synonomous with the ailments of the weaker sex, was the subject of the book review given last Monday evening for members of the Altrusa club by Faye Kern Schulz, well known in the county for her interesting and colorful reviews. The title of the book, "Lydia Pinkham Is Her Name" is a biography the events in the life of this woman leading to the remedy that grossed more than four million dollars to the firm in 1925. Members and guests of Altrusa club met at the Elks club for a dinner meeting last Minday evening. Three things caused Lydia E. Pinkham's rise to fame, although her feat wasn't accomplished over night. First factor in the life story was a husband who was a failure as a real estate man and who was a victim of the panic of 1875. Second factor was four hungry children who had to be fed, clothed and educated, and the last factor was a book that was purchased by a stranger for five dollars. Taking stock of her plight, Lydia Pinkham, in 1875, took the family remedy and gave it first to a neighbor woman about 30 years before it was placed on sale. Literally brewed over the kitchen stove, the home remedy grew into an industry that had become know in many countries. Selling her first three bottles for $5, she realized the potentialities as an earning power. Advertising and handbills had their part in the distribution of the remedy until, at the time of her death in 1883, it was sold in 33 countries. As time had gone by, pure food laws have demanded changes in the label and today vitamin B is an added ingredient. Reports were heard on business session, president Ann Clodt, president.
