SPORTS 25,767 Take Part in City Recreation Program During August Reports Derr Attendance of participants and spectators at the city recreation department’s sponsored functions during the month of August totaled 25,767 according to Don Derr, recreation director. This was contained in the director's monthly report submitted to the city recreation commission at their luncheon meeting last Thursday at the Chungking cafe. In addition to the regularly scheduled program, Derr reported the department had sponsored six special activities including a swimming meet, ping-pong tournament, square dancing, city-church league all-star game, doll show and a pet show. Other special functions performed by the department included assisting the Optimists in presenting their Talent Night and helping the Anaheim Farmers association plan their annual picnic. All-star Junior League softball teams played five softball games in neighboring towns and four in the city park. Also a co-sponsored Rotary team entered the Bellflower Softball tourney while regular teams in the league played several games outside of the scheduled contests. Derr reported the Junior League hit a new record in activity with a total of 138 activities scheduled during the month of August with brought out 350 and the apparatus and wading pool was used by 4278 children and adults, said Derr. Members of the commission are: Oscar Heying, chairman; John Ganahl, Tex Middleton, Arthur Shipkey, H. H. Stabbert, Mayor Chas Pearson, ex-officio; Paul Demaree, ex-officio and Me Gauer, ex-officio. St. Catherine's Plays Chevoitt On Wednesday St. Catherine's varsity football team will receive its baptism to fire next Wednesday afternoon when their mentor, Paul Grover, hauls them up to Culver City for a workout with Cheviott Military school. Grover has been putting out his share of the groans this month—symptoms of a malady that all All-star Junior League softball teams played five softball games in neighboring towns and four in the city park. Also a co-sponsored Rotary team entered the Bellflower Softball tourney while regular teams in the league played several games outside of the scheduled contests. Derr reported the Junior League hit a new record in activity with a total of 138 activities scheduled during the month of August with 3,791 boys taking part. These included softball, baseball, football, swimming, volleyball, ping pong, and table croquet. In reporting the Junior League, Derr paid special tribute to the team sponsors who in addition to financial support, devoted time in assuring the success of this program. Sponsors of teams were: Agren and Larson, Anaheim Sand and Gravel, Ehlers Bike Shop, Hatfield Cleaners, Granere and Peterson, Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars, 20-30 Club, Lakes Men's Store, Wallace Tractors, Foster Freeze, Williams Sport Shop and Nu-Way Shoe repair.
