Cherchez Les Femmes! Navy Seeks 35,000
Increasing its quota of enlisted women Reservists to more than 35,000, the Navy has broadened the categories of personnel eligible for Reserve membership.
Under the new regulations women who have had former satisfactory service in the Army, Air Force or Marine Corps are now eligible to apply for re-enlistment, as well as former Navy and Coast Guard personnel, who were originally eligible.
Women with no prior military service may also apply, providing they are high-school graduates between the ages of 18 and 40.
Enlistment in Class V-6 of the Naval Reserve is for a term of four years. Members are not called to active duty in peacetime without their consent, but are available for duty in time of national emergency.
Women who participate in the various programs of the Naval Reserve, which include home study courses, meetings with drilling units and two weeks' annual training, are eligible to qualify for advancement in rating and earn retirement credits.
Detailed information on enlistment in the Naval Reserve may be obtained from any naval recruiting station or naval reserve training center.

Pat Merrick Resigns Post
Sacramento, (WNS)—The resignation of Pat Merrick, secretary of the California Employment Commission, and widely known authority on unemployment and disability insurance problems, will become effective October 1.
This was learned from authoritative sources in the state department of employment, and was confirmed by C. A. Herbage, recently appointed commission member in charge of the department's accounts division.
Merrick, formerly with the California state chamber of commerce as its expert on unemployment insurance problems, plans to become a consultant on unemployment, disability and voluntary insurance plans, with offices in San Francisco.
To Assist Hawaii In Oriental Fruit Fly Control Study
Sacramento, (WNS)—Officials of the state department of agriculture left here this week for Hawaii to assist in the program to control oriental fruit fly infestation in the territory.
W. C. Jacobsen, assistant director of the department, said specialized technicians of the department will be sent to Hawaii in accordance with the recommendations of the special legislative committee recommendations.
Senator Fred Weybert of Salinas and assemblyman George A. Clarke of Planada were members of the committee which inspected the territory to ascertain the extent of damage caused by the insect and the dangers of invasion of the pest into the Pacific coast area.
Jacobsen said the object of California's participation in the program is to study the methods of control, the type of fruit attacked by the pest and to attempt to discover a method of stamping out the insect.
He said shipments of California fruit will be sent to the islands to determine which are hosts to the fly and which are less subject to attack.
University of California research scientists are already in Hawaii, Jacobsen said, attempting to find a parasite which will attack the fruit fly and destroy it.
The oriental pest is said to offer a great threat to California agriculture than did the Mediterranean fruit fly which invaded Florida in the late twenties.
Jacobsen said the Florida infestation was brought under control and stamped out by a program of host removal and spray.
