Conservation Head Retires After 42 Years of Service
San Francisco—The California Division of Fish and Game is losing the services of the oldest conservation official in the Nation in point of service.
After 42 years, Joseph S. Hunter, chief of the bureau of game conservation, retires this month at the maximum age limit for State employees. He is 70 years old.
The venerable conservationist started his State employment in 1907, when he was appointed a deputy fish and game commissioner at a salary of $100 a month. Previously he had served as an instructor of ornithology at the University of Nebraska, and as entomologist of San Mateo county.
During his colorful state career, Hunter also held the posts of assistant executive officer, chief of refuges, and chief of the bureau of patrol. He has acted as legislative representative of the fish and game commission since 1913.

41-Day Del Mar Meet Sets New Records
Del Mar—What will go down in California horse racing history as one of the most successful meetings ever staged by the Del Mar Turf Club was a matter for the record books this week as the cozy San Diego county seaside track wrote “finis” to its 41-day summer season.
The extensive meeting came to a close in a blaze of glory last Saturday as G. E. and Mrs. M. B. Kinsey's Top's Boy galloped to victory in the 10th running of the tradition-steeped Del Mar Handicap.
Attendance and betting handle, both yardsticks for measuring the success of any meeting, showed clear gains over 1948. Much of the increase was attributed to the offering of a daily double for the first time in southern California racing history. Webb A. Everett, Del Mar's director of racing, was the man behind the introduction of the daily double and its immediate success prompted him to declare that it would be retained next season.

DEER REFUGE SYSTEM
The retiring bureau chief was instrumental in gaining legislative action establishing California's extensive deer refuge system and is credited with helping to rebuild the state's deer population from its low of several hundred thousand head at the turn of the century to its present all-time high of more than three-quarters of a million.
"Back in 1910," Hunter relates, some of the natives complained that if the annual kill of 10,000 was maintained, there would be no deer left in a short time. Now it's nearly five times that figure—29 years and nearly a million hunters later."
Hunter's plans for the future fire indefinite, but call for continued hunting and fishing. The white-haired sportsman has been hunting since he was 12 years of age, and occasionally favors his right shoulder—a habit caused by his early shooting of small gauge shotguns.
In an official commendation presented recently by president William J. Silva, the fish and game commission expressed regret at losing Hunter's services, and thanked him for "important contributions to progress in fish and game conservation."

Joseph M. Schenck and Jay Paley, majority stockholders of the Del Mar Turf Club, harbor several plans to improve facilities for next summer's meeting which will open on July 26 and continue through September 9. Under their direction, many thousands of dollars were expended in improving the grounds for the meeting this year, and backed by the success of the 1949 season, they hope to carry out several other building projects to add to the comfort and enjoyment of Del Mar patrons.

Deer Season Opens Friday
San Francisco—When California's second deer hunting season opens Friday, September 16, in the north coastal, Modoc-Lassen and Sierra areas, hunters will find general conditions ranging from fair to poor, say wardens of the Division of Fish and Game.
Last winter's extreme weather, combined with poor range and feed conditions was blamed for a decrease in deer populations in some areas.
Deer "cafeterias" were set up by division personnel, sportsmen, and farmers in hard hit areas to check widespread starvation. The state agency reported the effort had some local beneficial effects, but was impractical for the many areas where range feed was in a critical supply.
Large-scale artificial feeding of deer herds has failed in California and many other states, according to the division. Intensified management practices, including the removal of excess deer from overbrowsed range, is considered the burgh Steelers.

The Idler, published in 1758, stated that "the trade of advertising is now so near to perfection that it is not so easy to propose any improvement," according to the Encyclopaedia BritanKickback may sound like a football term, but is more familiar in political circles.
Good advice: Do today's work well and forget about what tomorrow may bring.
BEN AGAJIANIAN
Aggie Boots One In Rams Giants Game
Bootin' Ben Agajian made his debut with the New York Giants by adding a conversion to his teammates' second quarter touchdown to knot the score 7-7 with the L. A. Rams last night (Wednesday) in Omaha, Nebraska.
The tie was short-lived, however, as the Rams paced by Bob Waterfield tallied in the third period to come out on top, 14-7 in the exhibition tilt.
Aggie left the land of frozen citrus Monday evening by air, joining his new team in Omaha. He was waived out of the All-American conference after the L. A. Dons released him prior to opening their 1949 season.
It was somewhat like a homecoming for the famous place-kick artist who broke into the professional ranks with National League teams. Before signing with the Dons, Aggie had played with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pitts-
