Special Attractions To Make State Fair Bigger and Better Than Ever
SACRAMENTO—Special attractions, greatly increased over past years, will make the California State Fair, September 1 through 11, a kaleidoscope of color and motion.
These special exhibits and programs form but a part of the big show with its major attractions which include night theatrical performances with stars of screen and radio, a horse show second to none, a gigantic carnival, thousands of head of livestock, and commercial and county displays.
The Hobby Show, topped by two model railroads and a model of the giant telescope atop Mt. Hamilton, will compete for attention with the Centennial Cookery, located in the other end of the Hobby Show and Food Exhibits Building.
Preview of Progress
The Preview of Progress, showing the latest scientific marvels, will be presented three and four times a day in Governor's Hall. A lamp smaller than a cigarette which gives light one-fifth as brilliant as sunlight, music broadcast on a beam of light, a cold stove which will fry an egg, and other wonders of the laboratory will be demonstrated.
Miners will compete in a gold panning contest, with $500 to go the one judged most expert.
Art in Action will be presented daily in the Arts Building and color photo transparencies will be displayed near the Women's Building each night.
Labor Day Show
Expert riveters will engage in a rivet throwing contest in front of the grandstand Labor Day, tossing the hot bits of metal a distance of 140 feet.
For those who like the livestock there will be judging during the Fair, while the Hall of Flowers will house the greatest floriculture show in history.
Programs televised in San Francisco will be picked up by the latest television receivers in the Homes and Appliances Building. More than a dozen bands will play concerts from the bandstand near the Hall of Flowers. Drum and bugle corps will parade about the grounds and will go through maneuvers on the parade ground near the Junior Division.
These are just a few of the free attractions offered this year at the reduced admission to the grounds of 50 cents.

KwiKset Locks, Inc., Anaheim's newest manufacturing firm, showed a film to members of the Kiwanis club last Tuesday when they met for their regular meeting at the Elks club at noon hour. The film showed the complete process employed in the manufacture of the various locks
Odds of Death In Auto Accident Laid at 18 to 1
Sacramento (WNS) — Chance are eighteen to one for California motorists, that if they are involved in an automobile accident they will be killed.
The California Highway Patrol made this estimate today, stating that last year, 3,085 persons were killed, and 79,546 injured in 562 accidents.
The patrol, according to Clifford E. Peterson, commissioner, expects the same percentages to hold good this year.
"Motorists and pedestrians are acting this year much the same as they did in 1948," he said. "Excessive speed, improper passing use of intoxicants, right-of-way violations and general disregard of safe practices are the chief factors in keeping California high on the list of states with bad accident records."

In the absence of the president Clyde Nickles, Ted Payne presided for the business session. Ray Marshall had charge of the program for the day.
During the meeting, all those members who had a birthday during the month of August were introduced.

Mobile X-Ray Unit at Fair
Among the many features at the Orange County Fair, to be held August 18 through 21, will be the Mobile X-Ray unit of the Orange County Tuberculosis and Health Association, according to Mrs. Wayne Reafsnyder, president.
Free chest X-rays will be available throughout the duration of the Fair for all persons over 15 years of age. Everyone who has not had a chest X-ray within the last two years was urged to have one at the fair.
"The Mobile X-ray Unit is becoming a familiar sight as more and more Orange County Citizens are showing good sense and practicing good health by taking this protective measure," Mrs. Reafsnyder said. While tuberculosis is on the wane, there are still enough undiscovered cases at large in the community to warrant continued X-raying of adults in the county until these cases are brought to light," she stated.
