Romantic History Surround Gems in Replica at Hurst Jewelry Company
Anyone who labors under the delusion that diamonds are always white should pay a visit to the show window of Hurst Jewelry Company, 119 West Center street, this city, not only to feast their eyes upon the matchless beauty of the twelve fabulous gems displayed (in replica) but also absorb some of their most amazing, romantic and incredible history. The selection will be on display until August 27.
Naturally, first is the Cullinan, the largest diamond in the world, pure white, the original weight of which was 3106 carats, but now cut into a number of stones, the replica on display weighing 530 carats, and blazes from the British sceptre.
Bluer than even the blue of California skies is the Hope diamond, concerning which reams have been written and which ill luck followed invariably from owner to owner. Most recent owner of the Hope diamond was the late Evelyn Walsh McLean of Washington.
Matchless Eugenie
Presented by Napoleon III to his Empress, the Eugenie diamond began its career obscurely until it came into possession of Russia during the reign of Catherine the Great. It weighs 51 carats and must have been a tremendous foil to the beauty of the matchless Eugenie.
Used by Napoleon to finance his invasion of Russia, the Polar Star, which tips 40 carats, was later purchased by Russia to add to the crown jewels.
Nicholas de Sancy, in 1570 took the Sancy diamonds to France, where it became a football for ransom, murder, intrigue and the loot of bandits. It now is at least among the other diamonds of the Vicount Astor collection.
Next to the Cullinan and the Hope diamonds, perhaps the most famous and best known is the Koh-I-Noor, which was cut in India in the 14th century. It was presented to Queen Victoria by India and originally weighed 186 carats. Queen Victoria had it recut to its present size, reducing its weight to 109 carats. It is one great gem that has never been sold.
Center of the fabulous Persian crown jewels, the Shah weighs 86 carats. Originally the Shah was wont to present it to his latest wife, so that the lovely jewel must have had many wearers, until in 1853 it was sold to Nicholas I, Emperor of Russia, when, because of its unusual shape, it was mounted in the peak of the Russian crown.
One of the rarest gems in the world, and one of only three known green diamonds, the Dresden Green was found in India and cut in Dresden. It was set in the shield of the crest of the Earl of Luxumburg, and later re-sold to its original owner.
The Florentine Yellow, weighing 183-plus carats, was discovered in India in the 1400's. The Duke of Burgundy took it to France, and when the Duke was killed the stone was lost, to be found by a peasant, who, thinking it but a piece of glass, traded it to a dealer for a bottle of wine. It later was owned by Pope Julius II, who sold it to the Grand Duke of Tuscany and became one of the great jewels of the Austrian crown.
Finally the Regent, weighing 215 carats, was found in a ditch following the French Revolution. The Star of South Africa, 46½ carats, was found by a child in a streambed on her father’s farm and was sold by a native to Earl Dudley. It is the diamond that started the diamond rush.
