CHRISTIAN SCIENCE The Golden Text of the Sunday Lesson-Sermon on "Soul" in all branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, is from Isaiah: "Thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones." In the parable of the prodigal son as related by Jesus in Luke's Gospel it is recorded that "the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living... And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! ... And he arose, and came to his father. ... And ... said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and inthy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; ... and let us eat, and be merry: For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found." On this subject Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures:" "In Science we learn that it is material sense, not Soul, which sins; and it will be found that it is the sense of sin which is lost, and not a sinful soul." The reason for this fact is found in the many barriers and competitive organizations and plans. To name but a few, they are Sunday programs of recreation, such as golf, Sunday visiting, Sunday socials, Sunday ball games, Sunday movies, Sunday newspapers, Sunday family reunions, Sunday sight-seeing, late Sunday morning sleeping, business transactions. Undue stress may be given to secret societies, funeral homes, clubs, etc., which divert attention to themselves and unintentionally lessen interest in the church. We condemn Russia for eliminating God and the Church; but by a slow process of spiritual anesthetic we are doing the same thing. We would not want the result as seen in Russia. Why not accept the invitation and COME TO CHURCH NEXT SUNDAY? —Rev. D. Carl Yoder. Our Preacher Says Scientific minds have produced modern inventions but they have little knowledge of the spiritual life. The scientists that are responsible for the atomic bomb are throwing up their hands and declaring those engaged in religion must hurry to produce a spiritual force, the only power that will defeat the destructive force of this, the greatest destructive war instrument. Now is the time when we humans need to submit to the divine charge of receiving a spiritual power through a regeneration of the Spirit. DO YOU KNOW... 1. What is the shortest Psalm? 2. And Jeanne, who works as a secretary, will sing for the first time with a great symphony orchestra...for an audience of nearly a million people. We don't know what this chance will mean to Jeanne, but similar Sunday evenings have been very important in the careers of many singers and musicians—Claramae Turner, contralto, and Jerome Hines, basso, both with the Metropolitan Opera Company, Dorothy Warenskjold, soprano with the San Francisco Opera Association, Paulena Carter, concert pianist, and others.
