Akron Preps For Soap Box Derby Finals
Akron, O.—The twelfth annual All-American Soap Box Derby, the great racing classic of the boys' world, will be run here on August 14, it was announced today by the Chevrolet Motor Division, national co-sponsor of the event.
More than 75,000 spectators are drawn every year from all parts of the country to see the 150 youthful contestants — each a champion from his home town—guide their gravity-powered, hand-made racing cars down the specially constructed track at Derby Downs.
Since early June local Derby races have been held in 150 participating communities, each co-sponsored by a local newspaper or civic organization. During the week before the race, Akron is transformed into "Derbytown" as merchants, industrialists and civic organizations participate in some phase of the work of entertaining the champions and guests.
The national champion will win a $5,000 scholarship to the college of his choice. Second prize is a Chevrolet automobile. Other valuable merchandise prizes and trophies go to the top five place winners, and to the drivers whose cars win special awards for construction and design.
Realtors to
Realtors to Stage Multiple Listing Contest
Anaheim Realtors voted to stage a Multiple Listing Contest based on listings and sales of real estate during the period August 5 to September 15 at their Friday morning breakfast meeting held August 5 at the La Palma Grill.
Del Jackson, contest chairman, outlined the rules of the contest, announcing that prizes of $25 and $10 in merchandise would be awarded to the winning Realtors.
Bert Arnold, chairman of the Multiple Listing Division of the Anaheim Realty Board, stressed the advantages of Multiple Listings, stating that this method exposes the property to all potential buyers due to the listing being in the hands of 40 Realtors in the Anaheim area. In addition, the Multiple Listing service includes instruction to sellers in how to prepare their property for sale and assistance in financial arrangements. From the buyer's standpoint, the Multiple Listing service is equally advantageous, enabling the buyer in one visit to any member office to see an active file of many properties offered for sale in this area.
First reports on the contest will be given at the next meeting to be held August 1, 1949.
