Stage Square Dance Festival At County Fair Santa Ana, July 28.—Square dancing clubs and groups throughout southern California, as well as the general public, are cordially invited to attend the big square dance festival being held in connection with the 1949 Orange County Fair scheduled for the new fairgrounds located on former Santa Ana Army Air Base near here, Aug. 18-21, inclusive. This special event will be free to dancers and spectators alike, the only charge being the regular general admission to the fairgrounds. A large area on the fairgrounds has been set aside for the square dancing with plenty of space for dancers and spectators. Several well-known callers will be on hand and a square dance orchestra has been engaged to furnish music. The square dance festival has been set for Friday and Saturday evening, Aug. 19 and 20, starting at 8 p.m., and Sunday afternoon, the last day of the fair, from 2 to 6 p.m. The Friday evening dancing has been especially designed for the young people. The first running of the Kentucky Derby, at Louisville, occurred in 1873. ‘Green Grow the Lilacs’ Is Next At Holiday Stage Scheduled to follow this week's run of "Mr. and Mrs. North" at the Holiday Stage is the delightful Western comedy “Green Grow the Lilacs,” starring Oliver Cliff as Curly, the singing cowboy; Mary Finney as the wise Aunt Eller; and Janet Hamer, petite singing star of “Son of Norway,” as Laurie, Curly's sweetheart. The large supporting cast of 20 includes John Alvin as the villain and June Lewis as Ado Annie. Janet Hamer went directly from her first motion picture assignment in “Sensations of 1945” into the ingenue role of Sigrid in “Song of Norway.” She stayed with the hit musical play, after its successful production on the west coast, during its two-year run on Broadway. Television commitments will be fulfilled after her appearance next week at the Tustin strawhatter. “Green Grow the Lilacs” is the heartwarming story of Curly and his sweetheart Laurie. Ado Annie, frivolous gal of the countryside, and her boy friend, the peddler, add comedy to the delightful tale. American folk dances and songs enliven the action which spans several episodes laid in a variety of settings. An ambitious undertaking, “Green Grow the Lilacs” is excellent summer fare for theatre lovers.
