By BOB FUNSETH
RANCHO RAMBLINGS ... Ewald Lemcke and I were in the U. S. Public Links Golf Championship this week at the new Rancho Golf course in Los Angeles. By proxy that is.
Ewald’s nephew Jack of Milwaukee and my cousin Carl of Spokane were doing the playing while we did the kibitzing from the not so comfortable confines of our salt mines in Anaheim.
The Lemcke’s beat the Funseth’s but neither of us brought home the bacon.
In the Harding Cup team competition on Saturday Milwaukee finished one spot above Spokane but both were in the second division.
This week’s individual match play saw my namesake go down to defeat on the first day to one Bobby Haag of Bethel, Kentucky, 2 and 1. Lemcke defeated Edwin Bohardt of Dayton, Ohio, 2 and 1 but on Tuesday lost to Bob Geisler 5 and 4.
'Nuff biographical.
Bob Bissett of Santa Ana survived the first round but was bested by Martin Stanovich of San Francisco 3 and 2 in the second round on Tuesday.
Bob Roux, son of Willowick’s golf pro, Art Roux, was knocked off in the first round of play by Daniel Kop of Honolulu, 4 and 3.
ROWLAND BECOMES PIO-NEER ... Ran into Lefty Rowland yesterday at Jackson's. Learned over a cup of coffee that he is now with San Bernardino of the Sunset League and has in two
Local Riflemen Enter NRA Area Match In L. A.

Two hundred twenty riflemen from southern California, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico will be firing for places on the area team which will compete in the NRA National championship at Des Moines, Iowa, in August.
This will be the first time that an Anaheim delegation has entered the competition and although confidence is not high it is expected that with experience gained the locals should really be threatening come next year.
Ralph Comstock who has been in charge of the City Rifle matches will accompany the thirteen men who represent three local

ROWLAND BECOMES PIO-NEER ... Ran into Lefty Rowland yesterday at Jackson's. Learned over a cup of coffee that he is now with San Bernardino of the Sunset League and has in two weeks won 4 and lost 1! Lefty started the season with Bakersfield of the California League and compiled a 7 and 1 record before being honored with a free agent diploma. Lefty played on Aggie's team in the City Basketball League last winter. It was regarded by all as the best five-man football team in the league. In case you didn't know—Mr. and Mrs. Lefty make their home at 325 E. Sycamore.
AGGIE HITS TRIPLE ... Boot-in Ben has socked a triple this week. Not only has he become a brand new papa but is opening his Sporting Goods store in Long Beach on Friday and Saturday and follows all this excitement by reporting for practice with the Los Angeles Dons on Monday.
O'KANE OK ... John O'Kane, youth dynamo of our fair village, has returned from the Izaak Walton convention in Denver to report that the Ike's from all over the land were plenty interested in the "Huckleberry Finn Day" held in May by our own Ike's. John went north armed with Gazette clippings and photogs of the event and really convinced the delegates of the stupendousness (wow) of the event. He was called on to address the convention from the floor (the only one so honored) and gave a full report of the youth activities of Anaheim's Ikes. John is of the conviction that conservation should start with the youth of America and that conservation groups should do a lot more work towards fostering youth activities along these lines. Right you are John!

COMSTOCK LAUDED... Major Ralph Comstock, commandant of the California Cadet Corp at the high school and director deluxe of our city's ambitious sharp-shooting program was tossed a bouquet in the July issue of the American Riflemen—official publication of the National Rifle Association. An article appearing in the nationally circulated magazine described the rifle enthusiasm present in Anaheim—largely attributed to Ralph. It pointed out the excellent record attained by the Anaheim cadets at Sacramento, the night school program and the new outdoor range which is nearing completion. All these things come under the guiding hand of one Ralph Comstock.
POSTSCRIPT ... I parred the 16th hole at Willowick Sunday morning.
Legion; Optimist Nines in Double-Header Tonight
Vic Ruedy’s American Legion nine takes on the Norwalk-Bellflower team tonight at 6:45 under the arcs at La Palma park.
The Optimists fill out the regular Thursday night double-header by meeting the Sportsmen Paradise team of Norwalk-Bellflower with their game starting at 9 a.m.
Last Thursday the locals split with the Legion beating Whitier 5-2 and the Optimists getting edged 4-2 by the Pacific Clay products team.
Renew old window shades that are faded and worn by giving them two coats of paint. A flat wall paint well-thinned with oil and applied quickly is what is used.
'Tkes' Schedule Casting Events
Expert casting instruction will be offered for the second time to Anaheim Boy Scouts by Izaak Walton casters next Tuesday night, beginning at 7 o'clock at La Palma park. Another instruction period for local scouts will be next Sunday morning at 9:30 o'clock, Walton spokesmen stated.
A registered skish tournament will be held Sunday morning, July 17, at 9:30 o'clock at La Palma park casting pool. Everyone is invited to compete in the bait, fly and bass bug contest, the results of which will be registered with the National Skish Association.
The national registered casting tournament will be held Sunday, August 14, at Long Beach, with top casting scores to be officially registered.
Casting practice will be featured every Tuesday night beginning at 9:30 o'clock and Sunday mornings at 9:30 o'clock at the La Palma pool.
Junior Rifle Program Started
The summer rifle program for juniors at the high school range is well underway. This year it is in coordination with the Anaheim recreation program.
Under the direction of Mrs. Fora Watters and Ralph Comstock approximately 60 boys and girls are receiving daily instruction in marksmanship and fulfilling qualifications for diploma, medals, pins, basards and Boy Scout merits badges.
At the end of the summer a City Recreation championship match will be held with the boys and girls each competing in two age groups—12-15 and 16-18.
Boys and girls desiring to enter the program may still do so. The boys are instructed on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10-12 a.m. and 1-4 p.m.; the girls meet on Tuesday and Thursday from 11-3 p.m.
