"The Church Invites You
"To fail to recognize the presence of God is the supreme tragedy of life. To fear the presence of God is the supreme terror of life. To seek the presence of God is supreme wisdom. To know his presence is the fullest joy. To be fitted for his presence is the highest achievement."
The worship service creates an atmosphere conducive to fellowship with God. Why not accept the invitation and COME TO CHURCH NEXT SUNDAY?
—Rev. D. Carl Yoder
Our Preacher Say
A Lie
The essence of lying is in deception, not in words; a lie may be told by silence, by equivocation, by the accent on a syllable, by a glance of the eyes attaching a peculiar significance to a sentence, and all these kinds of lies are worse and baser, by many degrees, than a lie plainly worded.
—John Ruskin.
The Christian life should be one of endless seeking to attain higher living.
One has more life as he has less things.—E. S. Jones.

Sunday evening's message by Rev. Lee will be "Christianity and My People."
The union choir, comprising singers from regular choirs of all the churches belonging to the Anaheim Association, will be directed by Miss Gania Demaree.
Churches holding membership in the Association include the Evangelical United Brethren, First Christian, Free Methodist, First Presbyterian, Grace Lutheran, St. Michael's Episcopal, White Temple Methodist and Wesley Methodist.

This may be premature, but if my crystal ball doesn't fail me, the way it did last November, I should tell you now. I have reservations, bought and paid for, on the America, sailing from New York on the 27th of July.
The trip is about two-thirds committee business, and one-third personal. I'm the chap who gets the jobs that aren't thought to be interesting or important. Sometimes they become very important.
Two years ago, the chairman turned Archives over to me. That agency has now seen the end of frequent reorganizations; it can come for its appropriations without embarrassment; its morale is improved, and it has a new Archivist. I was also able to prevent a great steal in this area from the Negro citizens who had bought and built their own homes. Bureaucrats and planners don't like independent home owners.
This year the chairman gave me, among other agencies, the American Battle Monuments Commission. This agency has super-

vision over 8 cemeteries and 11 monuments of World War I, and will take supervision over 14 cemeteries, and the memorials, of World War II. If I had space, I'd list them with pride. They were christened with American blood.
What did I find? Here was an agency which, in ten years, had never asked for more than $150,-000 a year, and which had dropped during W.W. II as low as $41,-000, suddenly putting itself in the million dollar class. We gave it $1,078,500 last year, and for the current year we will give it $9,-758,000. The record shows that $5,000,000 of that was a down payment on $48,000,000 the agency wants in, say, four years.
I put our statistical clerk on those figures. She finds the Commission proposed to build 6 monuments costing 1¼ million dollars each, and 6 costing $700,000 each, and I wonder about the psychology of spending that money in countries having trouble eating and rebuilding themselves. Maybe that sort of thing is why they think we are a nation of suckers and are lousy rich. The Commission wants 14 flagpoles, at $17,000 each, or $25,000 if we include fees and other costs. Grass seed doesn't seem to cost the same in different cemeteries, nor other things they have to buy and do. My subcommittee chairman decided it was time for someone to see what is going on, so that's my summer job. Mrs. Phillips will go with me, but she'll sit on a hotel porch in southern France and rock!
If any resident of the 22nd District has a relative buried in one of these cemeteries, and I visit that cemetery, which is likely, I'll undertake to see the grave and report on its location and condition, and the care of the cemetery.
