Solons Approve Pay Hike for County Educators Sacramento, (WNS)—The legislature has taken final action on pay raises for members of county boards of education. The house approved a $5 per meeting pay increase for the board members. They now receive $5 for each meeting attended but under provisions of a bill sponsored by assemblyman Francis Dunn, Oakland, the educators will receive $10. Dunn said he felt the pay increase in order for members of county education boards are the only group of public officials receiving less pay than legislators. At present the assemblymen and senators receive $10 per day in session and 12 daily for expenses. Elephants of Ceylon are generally tuskless. Educational Aid Available to War Widows, Children Widows and children of veterans whose death was due to wartime military service should apply now if they want to take advantage of state financial assistance in furthering their education starting with next fall, Ben Liebermann, county service officer, recommends. Under the State Veterans Depends Education Act, the Department of Veterans Affairs will pay $20 a month to eligible full-time students at the high school level and $40 a month at college level. Certain papers, such as marriage or birth certificates and Veterans Administration records, are needed to establish eligibility for this assistance. It's a good idea to get these preliminaries cleared out of the way so the checks can start arriving without delay after school begins. Assistance to widows, who are eligible until they remarry, is available up to four years of schooling. For dependent children, the assistance continues until they complete their studies or until they become 27, whichever occurs first. Children cannot receive assistance before they reach the age of their 16th birthday, and must be enrolled under the program before they reach the age of 21. In both cases, five years' California residence prior to date of application is required. The deceased veteran need not have entered service from this state, however.
