Senator Tenney Faces Removal As Chairman, Un-American Committee Publisher of Newsletter Noted for its Attacks On Members Opposing Tenney’s Bills Discovered As High-Salaried Employee of Senate Committee Sacramento (WNS)—Discovery that the editor of a publication which has been attacking members of the legislature is actually an employee at a high salary of a state senate committee touched off a spark here which may result in the removal of a member of the senate as chairman of that committee. The editor is Edward H. Gibbons, publisher of a newsletter purportedly devoted to exposing subversive activities. He has been employed by the Senate Committee investigating un-American activities at a salary of $220 per week since March 13. Author of Loyalty Bills The Senator is Jack B. Tenney of Los Angeles, chairman of the committee, and author of a number of measures prescribing loyalty oaths for various public employees, candidates for office, union officials, and members of the State Bar Association. Through the use of this publication, Gibbons has on several occasions linked the names of members of the legislature with those of avowed communists. The names so linked have invariably been those who have expressed disagreement with Tenney’s proposals. Indignation was running high this opposition is indicated through his recent statements to the effect he is considering retirement from the committee. It has been rumored that the senate rules committee does not intend to re-appoint him to the committee if it is continued. Asked about this he stated he has devoted ten years to the committee and can no longer afford to continue. He said he is considering retiring from the committee to spend full time in the practice of law. The question to be involved in the inquiry, which, it has been indicated, will be demanded, is the propriety of a senator placing on the state payroll an editor who is attacking members of the legislature apparently because they do not agree with that senator. State Officer at Cypress-Magnolia Meeting Tonight Frank Pierce, public relations director of the state farm bureau is to be the speaker and song leader at the meeting of the Cypress-Magnolia Farm Center this (Thursday) evening, May 19, at 6:30 o’clock at the Magnolia school. Ruth Stoufer, from Amana, Iowa and nationally known home economist will demonstrate how to save money and food by deep-freezing. Miss Stoufer is slated to give tips on how to select, prepare and enjoy frozen foods. Entertainment will be provided by a trio of girl baton twirlers. The usual pot-luck dinner will be served at 6:30 with each person asked to bring a meat, salad or vegetable dish large enough to serve 10 people. Through the use of this publication, Gibbons has on several occasions linked the names of members of the legislature with those of avowed communists. The names so linked have invariably been those who have expressed disagreement with Tenney's proposals. Indignation was running high among many of the senators today upon the disclosure that Gibbons is an employee, on a contract basis, of the committee. Intimidation of Members They feel that Tenney has used senate funds to intimidate mem- opposition of late with his so-called anti-communist legislation. During the week an issue of the Gibbons publication linked the names of a number of members of the legislature with avowed communists. The members so linked were among those who have expressed opposition to the Tenney program. Storm of Resentment If an investigation is demanded, and it appears likely in view of the fact that 20 senators have opposed the final measure of a series which had been presented by Tenney, it will bring to a head a storm of resentment against the Los Angeles solon which has been quietly brewing here for the past several weeks. Under provision of a bill sponsored by Assemblyman Lester McMillan, a two per cent fee will be charged on the assessed value of all private planes within the state excepting those owned by scheduled commercial airlines. McMillan said this will be the same type of "in lieu" tax as is now applied to automobiles. McMillan, who headed the assembly interim committee investigating air facilities throughout the state said that aircraft have long been escaping taxation because county assessors did not have the proper machinery within their offices to levy the taxes. Out of over 8,000 privately owned airplanes in California only approximately 5,000 are now taxed, McMillan said. The tax money will be placed in a special aircraft fee fund. Funds will be returned to the counties to pay for development of new aircraft facilities in the same proportion as planes are registered in the county. The bill must now go to Governor Warren for signature before enactment into law. The house approved a measure which will raise the supervisors pay from an annual $3,000 to $3,600. The district attorney will receive $7,800 in place of his present $7,200 salary and the auditor $6,900 instead of $6,300. The bill authorizing the increase was introduced by Senator Clyde Watson, Orange, and co-sponsored through the assembly by assemblyman Earl Stanley, Balboa. It has the prior approval of both the supervisors and the county grand jury. REDLANDS CONTRACTOR LOW BIDDER FOR CONSTRUCTION OF ORANGE GUARD ARMORY Sacramento (WNS) — L. P.
