Recommend Cryolite to Control Orange Worms Cryolite spray is still the recommended control for orange worms pending the conclusion of tests being made with thirteen new chemicals on 25 treatment plots in Orange county. This is the statement of Dr. E. L. Atkins, entomologist from the Citrus Experiment Station and R. G. Bumgardner, deputy agricultural commissioner, at a meeting of citrus growers called last Friday by the Agricultural Extension Service. The meeting was held at the Charles Witte orchard west of Garden Grove where some of the plots are located. The materials showing up best at this time are cryolite, DDD and parathion. The latter material is still very expensive. The cost of cryolite spray is about $12 to $13 per acre. The time of treatment is also being tested, since the time of application is as important as the right kind of material. Dr. Atkins explained that one set of plots were treated in March, another set is being treated now (May-June) and a third set will have the two applications. Each test plot consists of 44 trees. Treated plots so far have shown an average of two oranges per hundred with worm stings. The untreated plots have shown a range of 16 to 50 oranges per hundred with worm infestations. Charts were shown by Dr. Atkins on the trend of worm infection, being low in the winter months, high in June and returning to a low ebb in September. Specimens of the four most important species of worms were also shown the growers. They are the Tortrix, the Holcocera, the Pyroderces (pink scavanger worm) and the Brown Tortrix. Antonia S.
