Anaheim Co-Ed Wins Honors in Big Art Contest
Jean Fearns, Anaheim Union high school student had a show piece in Scholastic Magazine's 1949 scholastic art and photography awards, it was announced by the publication's New York City headquarters this week.
She competed with students from all sections of the United Staes, Canada, Hawaii and the Virgin Islands.
The scholastic awards have been conducted by Scholastic Magazines, weekly junior high and high school classroom publications, for the past 25 years.
This year more than 100,000 pieces were entered. National honors include $10,000 in cash awards, 95 tuition scholarships to leading art schools and representation in the national exhibition.
Students first received local recognition for their work through regional exhibits sponsored by 41 department stores throughout the country. Regional winners and entries from students in unsponsored regions then were sent to Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for national judging.
With approximately 1,300 student creations on display, the 1949 National High School Art Exhibit will fill the Fine Arts Galleries at Carnegie Institute, Pittsburg, May 7 to 31.

Legion Auxiliary Presents Film Library Here
A memorial film library was presented to the Anaheim Public library by the American Auxiliary last Thursday night with Elizabeth Calnon, head librarian accepting the gift from Mrs. Margaret Peterson, auxiliary president, and Mrs. Mary Louise Helsing, community service chairman.
These eight millimeter films were purchased by the auxiliary members of Post 72, this city, in memory of their deceased members and Legion Post commanders.
The motion picture library will be loaned to any holder of a local library card for a period of three days.
All persons interested in furthering this film library project are invited by the auxiliary and the library staff to contribute eight or 16 millimeter reels on sports, travel or adventure subjects.
The borrower of all films must provide a projector for viewing the pictures.

All persons interested in furthering this film library project are invited by the auxiliary and the library staff to contribute eight or 16 millimeter reels on sports, travel or adventure subjects.
The borrower of all films must provide a projector for viewing the pictures.
This memorial presentation furthers two of the auxiliary's projects—Americanism and community service.
"Added appreciation of our American way of life is inspired in viewing beautiful United States scenes, displays of good sportsmanship and unique outdoor events," Mrs. Peterson remarked.
Titles of films available to date in the new library section are "New England Holiday," "Yosemite," "Fishing Thrills," "Football Parade," "California Picture Book." "Sports Thrills of the Year" and "Wonder Dogs in Action."
