Drunks Eligible For Disability Insurance Checks
Sacramento (WNS)—The California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board added a new wrinkle to the payment of unemployment disability insurance today when it handed down a decision authorizing payments for drunks.
Acting in the case of a claimant in Los Angeles, who was under a voluntary disability plan and was denied insurance by the company which handled the plan, the board ordered the private company's decision reversed, and the payments made to the alcoholic.
"The claimant had been drinking alcoholic beverages excessively for eight years," said the decision. "For several weeks prior to leaving his work, this excessive drinking increased to a point where he was unable to control it."
The alcoholic terminated his employment, sought self-commitment to a county hospital, and later was placed on probation in a sanitarium.
In its reason for the decision, the commission said that under provisions of the voluntary plan, "unemployment compensation disability benefits shall be paid to any employee who while insured becomes disabled by physical or mental illness or injury which prevents him from performing his regular or customary work." The claimant's disability occurred while he was employed, the board said, and therefore he is entitled to state benefits.
State Senate OK’s Watson Water Bill
Indicative of a repetition of the successful Salvation Army Salvage Week drives held elsewhere in the Southland, local residents this week began collecting their ho-longer-needed household articles for contribution during the campaign which starts here June 4.
Calls have already been received at the local station, 4631, according to Major Orlo Ellison, of the Salvation Army Social Service Center serving this area. Callers are donating cast-off shoes, clothing, furniture, radios, and other household appliances.
Major Ellison assured the prompt and courteous operation of a fleet of Red Shield pick-up trucks when the drive gets underway.
The Salvage Week campaign is held here every year. Donated items are refurbished and sold at Salvation Army headquarters to provide for the social service center's year-round program of rehabilitation.
Owing to the complete collapse of the paper market and the fact that the Social Service Center has no facilities for disposing of waste paper and magazines, paper pick-ups have been discontinued for the present.
Vets Urged to Make Application For Tax Savings
Veteran home-owners who have not yet filed application for their $1,000 exemption for tax purposes on the assessed valuation of their property are advised by Ben Liebermann. Orange County Director

State Senate OK’s Watson Water Bill
Sacramento, (WNS)—The state senate has passed senate bill 165, by Senator Clyde Watson of Orange county, which relates to the Orange County Flood Control District.
The bill authorizes the district to prevent waste or diminution of water by prohibiting unlawful exportation, and also authorizes the district to obtain water from outside sources for beneficial use in the district.
The senate also passed SB 509 by Watson, an urgency bill excluding certain lands from the district.
Both bills now go to the assembly for approval.

Vets Urged to Make Application For Tax Savings
Veteran home-owners who have not yet filed application for their $1,000 exemption for tax purposes on the assessed valuation of their property are advised by Ben Liebermann, Orange County Director of Veterans Affairs, not to wait until the last minute to do so.
"The last minute" is the last day of May. But veterans who have let this important matter slide in previous years will bear out the wisdom of seeing their assessor about it at once. There is absolutely no chance to benefit by this substantial saving after May 31st.
He reminded veterans that if they are unable to spare the time from work during the assessor's office hours, their wives may file the application for them. This has been made possible this year for the first time, under the terms of a new law.
Veterans whose property is valued at not more than $5,000 are eligible for the exemption, provided they apply for it in time. Those who live in incorporated cities must file separate applications with both the City and County Assessors.
Proof of veteran status should accompany the application, particularly if it is the first one the ex-serviceman is making. He should also be able to provide a legal description of the property, in order to save his and the assessor's time.
