'To Be or Not To Be—That is The Question,...'
Fred Samuels, 58 years, 111 North East street had some difficulty making up his mind of whether to plead guilty to a driving while intoxicated charge.
Officers Fisher and Roger had picked Samuels up Sunday evening and brought him to the police station for examination.
Dr. Paige pronounced Samuels intoxicated but the defendant demanded an examination by his own physician. However the physician of his choice declared that Paige's diagnosis was good enough for him and Samuels was booked.
At his arraignment in city court Monday morning, Samuels would not enter a plea without legal counsel. He reappeared in court in the afternoon and entered a plea of not guilty along with a request for a jury trial.
City Judge Bonnat granted the request and set trial by jury for May 23 at 9:30 a.m. The judge also set bail at $400.
Samuels was returned to the confines of his cell in the city jail and within 30 minutes asked to be returned to court where he entered a plea of guilty.
Judge Bonnat passed down a sentence of $400 with $50 suspended or 175 days in the county jail. The defendant appeared in court Tuesday morning and paid 350 bucks and was released.
Spring Salvage Drive in Anaheim
Spring Salvage Drive in Anaheim Set for June 4-11
"Two purposes are served by sending your discarded articles to the Salvation Army's Social Service department," Major Orlo Ellison, manager of the "Army's" social service center serving this area said today.
They also furnish employment and aid for needy and handicapped persons through the organization's self-help program and are also taken off your hands and releasing valuable storage space in garage and closets."
Major Ellison was speaking of the army's work in connection with the coming Spring Salvage Week drive, which this year is again under the chairmanship of O. H. Renner, owner of the SQR store. June 4 through 11 has been set aside as Salvage Week in the Anaheim-Fullerton area.
Serving on the committee with Renner will be Mrs. Margaret S. Wright, who will have charge of press contacts; Mel Gauer, schools; the Rev. P. G. Neumann, churches; and Earl Woodward.
