'To Be or Not To Be—That is The Question,...' Fred Samuels, 58 years, 111 North East street had some difficulty making up his mind of whether to plead guilty to a driving while intoxicated charge. Officers Fisher and Roger had picked Samuels up Sunday evening and brought him to the police station for examination. Dr. Paige pronounced Samuels intoxicated but the defendant demanded an examination by his own physician. However the physician of his choice declared that Paige's diagnosis was good enough for him and Samuels was booked. At his arraignment in city court Monday morning, Samuels would not enter a plea without legal counsel. He reappeared in court in the afternoon and entered a plea of not guilty along with a request for a jury trial. City Judge Bonnat granted the request and set trial by jury for May 23 at 9:30 a.m. The judge also set bail at $400. Samuels was returned to the confines of his cell in the city jail and within 30 minutes asked to be returned to court where he entered a plea of guilty. Judge Bonnat passed down a sentence of $400 with $50 suspended or 175 days in the county jail. The defendant appeared in court Tuesday morning and paid 350 bucks and was released.
