DeMolay’s Hear First Hand Acet. Of War Atrocities
(Continued on Page 6)
guise under which thousands upon thousands of victims were brought to Dachau and similar camps.
“Upon entering the camp, usually by train, the people were told that for sanitary reasons it would be necessary to ‘delouse’ them . . .
In order to accomplish this all would have to disrobe . . .
“Then in small groups, of about 200, the people were herded into ‘shower’ rooms which had the usual plumbing fixtures. When all were in the room, the ‘showers’ were turned on—only water didn’t come out—gas did . . .
“At first carbon monoxide was used but that was found to take too long and so a new type was developed called K-4 which only took ten minutes . . .
“When it was evident that all of the victims were dead, the door was opened and the corpses dragged onto a conveyor.
“Any concealed jewels were removed from the bodies as well as all gold fillings. Unusually stout corpses were utilized for what ever fats and oils they might contain . . .
“Upon cremation, the ashes were mixed with an adhesive substance and used for streets. Today at Dachau, which has been taken over by Catholic, Jewish and Protestant churchmen—as a sort of shrine to the ignominity of mankind, these streets have been named, ‘the streets of death.’
“Why?”
“The question we all asked our-

"Upon cremation, the ashes were mixed with an adhesive substance and used for streets. Today at Dachau, which has been taken over by Catholic, Jewish and Protestant churchmen—as a sort of shrine to the ignominity of mankind, these streets have been named, 'the streets of death.'
"Why?"
"The question we all asked ourselves, in fact that which all of you must have asked, 'Why did they do it?'; 'For what purpose were all of these millions of civilians, non-combatants, so wantonly slaughtered?'
"First inkling came upon our return to France when we were able to examine more closely the scars of the German occupation upon that country...
"We then began to realize that the German plan was not simply to defeat a country's armies but to defeat her economically, culturally and morally...
"That is this process hundreds of thousands of men and women were taken to Germany to serve as slaves... forced to work in the factories and in the fields while the aryan stock was off conquering the world...
"As a result of diet which in most instances probably did not exceed 900 calories per day, these slaves of the master race would sooner or later collapse from exhaustion brought on from malnutrition...
'And this is the 'why' or at least one of the 'why's' of the Dachau butcher shops. Upon collapse the slaves were hauled to the 'Camp of Strength and Joy' for rehabilitation and disposal. Their places at the machines and in the fields were taken by new slaves.
Their Philosophy
"We must realize that the philosophy of the totalitarian state is that nothing can exist within the state that is not dependent upon the state...
"That the freedom of the individual to choose his occupation and his religion is non-existant in the totalitarian state...
"That these atrocities committed were the result of that thinking which excludes the individuality of the human being...
"That we must work to maintain our nation which does respect this individuality of the human being...
Work—Not Gripe
"In my office, I am constantly hearing people coming in to gripe about the 'state of affairs'"
"That these atrocities committed were the result of that thinking which excludes the individuality of the human being.
'That we must work to maintain our nation which does respect this Individuality of the human being.
Work—Not Gripe
"In my office, I am constantly hearing people coming in to gripe about the 'state of affairs'... about high taxes and the nimble brains in Washington and Sacramento...
"We must ever realize that our democracy is but an human institution and thus subject to all the weaknesses of humans and that what it needs is not gripes but constructive criticism.
"We have to pay a lot for our democracy but believe me, it's worth every cent of it."
