Quarter Horse Racing Meets To Be Licensed Quarter horse racing meets became a possibility this week when the state assembly approved a measure allowing California tracks to supplement their regular meets. Sam L. Collins, assembly speaker, is sponsoring the measure which will license running of the quarter mile, straightaway sprints by especially bred cold blooded horses. According to the Collins bill, quarter horse contests may be held in any licensed track including district and county fairs where betting money is handled through pari-mutuel machines. Colling's chief argument for inaugurating the meets is that added revenue will come to the state through increased betting. Collins stated that he knew of one contest where a $50,000,000 side bet was placed and not "one cent of revenue came to the state." Assemblyman Gordon Hahn, Los Angeles, said he was confused with Collins' latest maneuver in introducing the quarter horse bill because Collins had earlier introduced a constitutional amendment which would allow counties to ban racing if the voters so desired. Collins answered stating that he was neither adding or subtracting from the number of tracks in operation since his bill is 'a permissive act allowing the tracks to run quarter horse meets in conjunction with present thoroughbred contests. Havens Assails Housing Bill "The socialistic housing bill which Congress is at present considering will cost the American taxpayers $15,000,000,000 if it becomes a law," stated Paul Havens president of the Anaheim Reality Board at the meeting of the Multiple Listing Division held this morning. "Not only will this raise our local and federal taxes, but it will mean higher priced homes for Americans. If federal bureaucrats in Washington move into the housing industry, watch for expansion into medicine, steel production and other fields," warned Mr. Havens. He pointed out that the real estate and building industry is using about every worker and piece of material that it can locate in its record breaking production of homes. If the government enters the construction business, and thus bids up the price of materials and labor, the only alternative is a higher cost for homes. Is this to be changed by a handful of planners? Will life in barrack-type housing developments be the vogue in the future? I urge you realtors, and all citizens of Anaheim to enter their protest on this measure through our Congressmen. Only through a concerted effort on the part of every one of us can we kill this multi-billion dollar monster," concluded Mr. Havens.
