Free Handbook On Weed-Control Now Available
A new handbook on chemical weed spraying equipment is now available at the Orange county farm advisor's office. It describes types of sprayers, tells how to select the right ones for a specific job, gives suggestions for building a spray rig, and includes a section on calibration.
Chemicals are used for weed control in California on such crops as barley, wheat, milo, onions, carrots, celery, corn, and rice, as well as on fence rows, roadsides and ditchbanks. Equipment includes hand sprayers, motorized ground rigs, airplanes and helicopters, and ground drivers.
The authors of the circular advise farmers to consider two factors when choosing equipment for weed control: first, the varieties of jobs the equipment will have to do. For instance, if the sprayers must be adaptable to high-pressure or cattle spraying, as well as to weed control, it is advisable to select a high-pressure sprayer which can be regulated to lower pressures. The second consideration concerns the total area to be treated. It may be cheaper in some cases to hire a commercial outfit to do the spraying, or it may be economical for the farmer to build his own rig.
Those interested in getting the free handbook may write or call the Farm Advisor's office, 1104 West Eighth street, Santa Ana, for a copy.

10 Year Study Shows Florida Citrus Costs Less Than Half California’s
Florida citrus cost of production per acre is two-fifths of the costs per acre in California, according to a comparative study recently completed by farm advisor Harold E. Wahlberg and presented to the horticultural seminar of Palomar College at Vista.
The comparison is based on the long time Valencia cost study conducted by the farm advisor's office in Orange county and a similar study conducted by the Division of Economics, University of Florida. Cost data of the two citrus areas were compared and averaged for the past ten years. The findings revealed that although the Florida production costs were much lower than California's, our gross and net returns were almost double those of the southern state. Here are some of the comparisons made by the farm advisor. The first figure in the following data is for Orange county and the second figure is for Florida.
Labor and Power...$129.60 $37.57
Fertilizer 41.26 44.99
Pest Control 26.46 6.99
Taxes 22.68 4.66
Total Operating Costs 228.74 88.42
Interest on Investment 68.23 31.03
Total Costs 296.97 119.45
Gross returns during the 10 year period covered in the study averaged $567.12 per acre here and $267.56 per acre in the Florida citrus area. Average returns above costs were $338.38 per acre for the sixty orchards reporting here and $179.14 per acre for the 243 orchards surveyed in Florida. The ten year period included in the study was from 1938 to 1947.
Report Further Drop in State’s Cash Excess
Further decreases in the cash excess in the state treasury were reported by Thomas H. Kuchel, state controller.
Kuchel said the state had $81,-764,208 on March 31, compared to $88,881,007 on the last day of February this year.
And at the same time, general fund revenues showed an increase to $378,559,820 for the first nine months of this fiscal year, which is an increase of $27,031,248 over the same period a year ago.
Total disbursements for the cost of government for the first nine months of this year were $459,-382,626, Kuchel said, compared to $301,248,366 for the same period a year ago.
Retail sales and use taxes brought $227,340,447 into the state treasury during the first nine months of this year, an increase of $17,090,403 over the previous year, and the second largest revenue producer for the state was the bank and corporation franchise tax and income tax, which brought in $61,812,542, an increase of 10 per cent over the same period last fiscal year.
