Many persons who do not support the church recognize its value. E. Stanley Jones said to a business man, "You don't give the vote of your life to the churches; do you want them to burn down?" "No, by Jerry, it would ruin my business." He knew that if business is to be made possible there must be a basis of morality in the community. For the structure of life rests on character. Business that regards only itself with no concern for the moral universe, sooner or later, "breaks itself on that moral universe." Why not accept the invitation and COME TO CHURCH NEXT SUNDAY? —Rev. D. Carl Yoder. Our Preacher Says For every man you meet who is hungry for bread, there are dozens whose spirits are starving simply for want of a conscience-quickening idea. Ideas are transferred from mind to mind, and here is the real value of living. Well may we examine ourselves to see whether we possess such an idea, and if we do not, then it is high time to get it; then having it, we must pass it on to others. Cultivate a good conscience and let it be expressed to others. DO YOU KNOW... 1. To what city did Joshua refer when he said, "Shout; for the Lord hath given you the city"? 2. The Golden Text from plans reads, "Whatsoever thing honest, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; be any virtue, and if there praise, think on these things." In Luke's Gospel it is related Jesus "entered into a and a certain woman harned received him into her house; she had a sister called Mary; also sat at Jesus' feet, and his word. But Martha was cut about much serving, and care him, and said, Lord, dost thou care that my sister hath leftover alone? bid her thou that she help me And Jesus unto her, Martha, Martha, thou careful and troubled about things; But one thing is n and Mary hath chosen that part which shall not be taken from her." The huge chorus, under the direction of Merle Hancock, will supplement the more than 800 other voices recruited from southland churches. Like the other participating choral groups and the Youth for Christ Symphony orchestra, the chorus' performance will be broadcast nationally (MBS). Another development which has helped to swell the attendance forecast is the report that scores of outlying communities are chartering buses to the event, according to Bob Pierce, who is directing Easter Service arrangements. In addition the Pacific Electric is running special trains from Los Angeles to make connection with Rose Bowl-bound Pasadena City Lines buses. Youth for Christ; of which Pierce is the Los Angeles director, is presenting the service, which is sponsored by the Christian Business Men's Committee of Pasadena. Easter Sunday, April 17th! At Pre-Easter Bible Luncheon Eighty-four Anaheim men attended the YMCA's second pre-Easter Bible, club luncheon held Wednesday noon in the First Presbyterian church, with the Rev. Alec Nichols, minister of the First Methodist church in Santa Ana, as speaker. The pastor's topic was "I Take Time to Worship." Mel Gauer introduced the speaker, and Bob Quast led the group singing with Ehrie Hartmann at the piano. Jim Morris, general chairman, announced that next Wednesday's meeting will be held in the same place from 12:05 to 12:55 p.m. Speaker for the occasion will be Dr. Alvin S. Haag of the University of Redlands, discussing the theme, "I Take Time to Pray." Easter Sunday, April 17th! How Did We All Make How Much Money Did We Take In and W LAST YEAR, General Electric's thousands of customers took 1 billion 632 million 701 thousand dollars worth of our products. In addition, other income amounted to 18 million 858 thousand dollars, so total income was 1 billion 651 million 559 thousand dollars. The income on General Electric products was at prices averaging for the year only 4% higher than in 1947 and only 37% higher than in 1940... compared to an increase since 1940 of 95% in the prices of all manufactured goods... a 71% increase in the cost of living... and an 83% increase in the take-home of hourly employees at General Electric. What did we do with this money? 1. How much did we have to pay out of sol aside for materials, supplies and other aids to production and customer service? To fill our plants and for the materials out of which we built our products we paid other companies and suppliers 735 million 851 thousand dollars. After setting aside an additional 38 million 275 thousand for replacement of worn-out plant and equipment, we had left a balance of 877 million 435 thousand dollars. 2. How much did our payrolls take? (There are about 188,660 of us.)* Out of what we had left after paying suppliers for materials and services needed to make our products, plus provision for replacement of equipment, our payrolls took a total of 610 million 330 thousand dollars... leaving us a balance of 267 million 105 thousand dollars. 3. How much additional did we put into pensions; insurance and other employee benefits? After paying others for materials needed to build our products and providing for worn-out equipment, and after paying our wages and salaries we also put aside an additional sum of 49 million 570 thousand. 3. How much additional did we put into pensions; insurance and other employee benefits? After paying others for materials needed to build our products and providing for worn-out equipment, and after paying our wages and salaries we also put aside an additional sum of 49 million 570 thousand dollars for pensions, insurance and other employee benefits... leaving a balance of 217 million 535 thousand dollars. Half of the monies collected here will be used for treatment of polio victims in this area, the remaining funds will go to the foundation of southern California clinic. Since the vast majority of physicians and hospitals in the county have adopted the Kenny method or modifications thereof, there is great current need for trained personnel to give the therapeutic treatment, Stephen said. At least two years of specialized training is required for each trained nurse before she is qualified to use the Kenny method, he added. The Infantile Paralysis Institute, while providing funds for hospital expenses of polio victims, does not have monies available for training nurses in the Kenny method. Consequently, said Stephen; it is necessary for the Kenny Institute to appeal directly to the public for funds. All local contributions should be sent to Robert Williams, fund treasurer, in care of the Bank of America, 201 East Center street, Anaheim. Assisting in the Anaheim drive are H. H. Stabbert, chairman of church groups; Mrs. C. H. Lawrence, chairman of special gifts, and W. Kenny Banks, chairman of container donations. How much did we have to set aside in taxes to support the Federal Government and its many projects at home and in other lands? After taking care of materials, replacement of equipment, wages and salaries; pensions and insurance, social security and so forth, we set aside the sum of 93 million 700 thousand dollars for Federal income taxes . . . leaving a profit of 123 million 895 thousand dollars—what the company saved out of the money taken in. 5. How much of this profit did we feel had to be used for new equipment, stockpiling of materials, getting out of debt, and strengthening the company to give good values and keep jobs as safe as possible in the coming "buyers' market"? After subtracting the items of materials, wages and salaries, pensions and benefits, and taxes—all of which are in the costs of operating our business—we felt we must "plow back" into our company for new equipment and materials and other strengthening investments the sum of 72 million 449 thousand dollars . . . leaving a balance of 51 million 386 thousand dollars. 6. How much did we then have left to reward our 250,000 stockholders for hisking their savings dollars to back up our plans and production? General Electric—its people, jobs and products—exists only through the stockholders' willingness to exchange their money for a share of ownership. After we have paid out or provided for materials, replacements, wages and salaries, pensions and benefits, taxes and "plow back" money . . . our stockholders got this last sum remaining from our income—51 million 386 thousand dollars. But the individual General Electric—its people, jobs and products—exists only through the stockholders' willingness to exchange their money for a share of ownership. After we have paid out or provided for materials, replacements, wages and salaries, pensions and benefits, taxes and "plow back" money . . . our stockholders got this last sum remaining from our income—51 million 386 thousand dollars. But the individual stockholders will pay from 17% to 82% of these dividends to the government in taxes.
