Chancellor Hutchins of the University of Chicago declares that the material side of our civilization has far outdistanced the moral and spiritual competence of our people to handle it so that the outcome now depends on whether our moral life can catch up and can catch up quick enough, to save the day. That takes us all in, saying to us, What about your life? Are you a part of the moral and spiritual renewal by which alone civilization can be redeemed? The Church offers opportunities for the developing of the needed spiritual force. Why not accept the invitation and COME TO CHURCH NEXT SUNDAY? —Rev. D. Carl Yoder Our Preacher Says Good and evil both increase at compound interest. For that reason the little decisions you and I make every day are of the utmost importance. A good deed done today may be the starting point toward victories over temptations little dreamed of. An apparently trivial indulgence in anger, content, pride, selfishness, may be the entering wedge of acts that might bring serious consequences—even crime. Who knows? DO YOU KNOW... 1. To whom did Jesus say, "One thing thou lackest?" 2. Where is Perea? 3. Who was the mother of James and John? 4. What story of benevolence is recorded of a man on the road to Jericho? 5. Why was Jesus called a Nazareth? DO YOU KNOW ANSWERED... 1. The rich young ruler. 2. The farther side of Jordan. 3. Salome. 4. A Samaritan caring for a man robbed and wounded. 5. Because he was born in Nazareth. The firms below sponsor the above articles and complimentary copies to the Anaheim Hospital: TELEVISION PARLOR Sales and Complete Radio Service 116 N. Care Centers SACRAMENTO (WNS) — Amendments to the Geddes Child Care bill which would take the state out of the child care center business were offered this week by Assemblyman Harold K. Levering of Santa Monica. Under terms of the Geddes bill, approved by the Assembly Education committee and now awaiting action by the assembly, child care centers would become a permanent responsibility of the state. An appropriation measure, also approved by the committee, would provide six million of state funds for the support of the centers for the next year. Relieve State Levering's amendments would relieve the state of the obligation by authorizing local school districts to establish and operate the centers on the general level contemplated by the Geddes measure. This would mean that school districts would be permitted to decide whether or not the centers should be operated and what the basis of need should be for eligibility. The local authority, however, could not liberalize the program but could make regulations more stringent. The Geddes bill places a ceiling of $150 monthly income on the parents of eligible children or a maximum monthly income of $40 for each member of the family. Children of veterans attending school, registered nurses, and public school teachers are eligible regardless of income. CHRISTIAN SCIENCE The Golden Text of the Sunday Lesson-Sermon on "Matter" in all branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, is this verse from Jere-mlah: "Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains; truly in the Lord our God is the salvation of Israel." According to I Samuel, David accepted the challenge of Goliath and said unto him, "Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield; but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied... And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead... and he fell upon his face to the earth. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone... but there was no sword in the hand of David." Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "Matter and Mind are opposites. One is contrary to the other in its very nature and essence; hence both cannot be real... Only by understanding that there is but one power—not two powers, matter and Mind,—are scientific and logical conclusions reached." Urge Local Control He said he believed the child care centers were parallel to public schools which are operated and controlled by local authority. "I can see no reason why the taxpayers of the state should be asked to take care of problems which rest pretty much within five counties of the state." "Certainly this method of handling the problem would be fair to all concerned and would relieve the minds of both parents who have at real need for such centers and the teachers and other personnel employed by the centers, from the uncertainty which has resulted from the state handling the problem." "I believe problems such as these are better handled by local authorities. When you retain local control it is usually much more satisfactory." Solution Acceptable Legislative observers commenting on Levering's proposal said they believed he has offered a solution which will be acceptable to both the assembly and the senate. They pointed out the Geddes bill carries an urgency clause which requires 54 votes in the assembly and 27 in the senate. They state it would not be possible to obtain sufficient support for the measure in its present form. Many members are opposed to obligating the state to further expenses by the expansion of governmental services. 000 people witnessed the six performances in the modernized, natural amphitheater of Ramona Bowl.
