ANAHEIM GAZETTE Page 9 Anaheim Gazette, March 17, 1949 Junior College Luncheon Thirty-five business leaders and school administrators sit at luncheon at the Fullerton Junior college at the annual meeting of the Merchandising and selling advisory committee this week to hear plans for annual college business day: FJC Advisory Committee Holds Annual Meeting The annual luncheon meeting of the Merchandising and Selling Advisory Committee of Fullerton Junior college was held on Thursday of last week, March 10, in the dining room of the home economics building on the campus. This committee was formed in 1946. All-Year Club Boosts County’s Tourist Sights Featuring Orange county and other points of interest, the All-Year club of southern California today brought out a second edition FJC Advisory Committee Holds Annual Meeting The annual luncheon meeting of the Merchandising and Selling Advisory Committee of Fullerton Junior college was held on Thursday of last week, March 10, in the dining room of the home economics building on the campus. This committee was formed in 1946 and have had an important part in planning the work of students enrolled in these courses in the college. Following the welcome by T. Stanley Warburton and Dr. W.T. Boyce, several reports of various committees were given. Included in the members present was Ernest Moeller, secretary-manager of the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce. Kenneth F. Hellyer is also a member of this committee but he was unable to attend the meeting. Guest at the session was J. W. Getsinger, general co-ordinator of business and distributive education at the San Diego Vocational high school and Junior college. He was interested in gaining ideas and suggestions for a similar committee which he is planning to form in San Diego. Near Seasonal Low Point in Farm Employment The Wepartment of Employment reports that agricultural employment is approaching the seasonal low point. Agricultural work is affording employment for about 10,000 more workers than for the same week in 1948. Due to the delays caused by early March rains, it is probable that the downward trend in agricultural employment will continue until the end of March. It is not anticipated that unemployment will be as great as it was a year ago. The asparagus harvest is still progressing slowly, but warm weather will accelerate this activity. There is adequate labor to meet the seasonal labor demands for this crop. Sugar beet thinning will commence about April 1, and it is expected that additional workers may be needed in the Sacramento valley for this work. The work is limited to stoop laborers with experience in sugar beets thinning. All-Year Club Boosts County’s Tourist Sights Featuring Orange county and other points of interest, the All-Year club of southern California today brought out a second edition of its colorful new trip-planning booklet. The book will direct the hundreds of thousands of out-of-state tourists to this area and other points of interest in the southland. The All-Year club is the community organization for advertising the tourist industry, which has brought in over one billion dollars of out-of-state income since the end of the war. The book, entitled “What to Do and See in Southern California,” is illustrated with a scene of the orange groves which can be seen in this area and one of San Juan Capistrano Mission. County Lures Visitors The All-Year club, in 27 years as official promoter of the local tourist industry, has found that these Orange county attractions are jutes to the typical southland visitors. A recreational map takes tourists through Orange county, pointing out the cities of Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Newport-Balboa, Laguna Beach, San Clemente Beach, San Juan Capistrano and Santa Ana. The trip-planning book dwells upon this area, suggesting that vacations view the orange groves and explore nearby mountains. It suggests visits to the seaside resorts of Seal Beach, Laguna Beach, Newport-Balboa, and San Clemente. “Spectacular sea cliffs loom over deep-sea coves near Laguna Beach’s art colony,” the book says, pointing out that the city's Festival of Arts “features living reproductions of famous paintings.” The book urges visitors in the summer to “budget extra time for the beach and ocean,” pointing out Orange county seaside spots. “Newport-Balboa’s bay is home port for 4,000 pleasure vessels,” the book continues. It tells tourists of the fishing in that area. Several Orange county fetes are in the book’s “Highlight Calendar of Annual Events.” Hallowe’en Follie These include the Anaheim Hallowe’en Follie, the Laguna... unemployment will be as great as it was a year ago. In southern California the estimate of citrus damage has been increased. Warm weather has caused the breakdown of fruit cells, revealing more extensive damage than had been previously estimated. This has caused an acceleration in the harvest in order to meet the pro-rate of marketable oranges. The need for citrus pickers may change if the crop damage proves to be much more extensive than previously anticipated. The Central Coast area and the San Joaquin valley report adequate labor to meet their labor needs for the next two or three weeks. Workers who expect to migrate to these areas for employment are cautioned that jobs may not be available until April. CONFINED TO HOME WITH CASE OF MEASLES Miss Grace Thompson, society editor of the Anaheim Gazette, is confined to her home for a week with a case of measles. Miss Thompson stated that even though this malady is a child's disease, it sometimes surprised grown folk by popping out like the proverbial "speckled red hen." LA HABRA ANNEXATION Secretary of State Frank M. Jordan has announced the filing of annexation papers by La Habra, of the uninhabited "annex No. 8, 1948."! The book urges visitors in the summer to "budget extra time for the beach and ocean," pointing out Orange county seaside spots. "Newport-Balboa's bay is home port for 4,000 pleasure vessels," the book continues. It tells tourists of the fishing in that area. Several Orange county fetes are in the book's "Highlight Calendar of Annual Events." Hallowe'en Frolic These include the Anaheim Hallowe'en Frolic, the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts in July; Flight of the Snowbirds at Newport-Balboa in August; the Newport-Balboa Tournament of Lights in August; Yacht Race Week in the harbor in August; Santa Ana's New Year Eve Frolic; Huntington Beach's Black Gold Days Festival and Twine Convention in September; the Huntington Beach Grunion Derby; Orange Harvest Festival; and the "Forty Miles of Christmas Smiles" along the coastline. The trip-planning book is the latest tool in the All-Year club's job of maintaining a flow of vacation visitors into southern California from other states, so that millions of dollars which they spend here will help to maintain local employment and business activity at a high level. It is mailed out by the hundreds of thousands to the people in Maine, Iowa, and elsewhere in other states, who read the All-Year club's advertisements describing this vacationland, and write in for further particulars. RUSHES TO BEDSIDE OF MOTHER IN EAST Mrs. Oscar Leeb of 825 South Claudina street, was called to Terre Haute, Indiana, last Saturday by the serious illness of her mother, Mrs. John Fessenbeck, who passed away an hour after she arrived there.
