CYPRESS NEWS (Too late for last week) The neighborhood kids are enjoying the four-day vacation period from school over Washington's birthday. Miss Elizabeth Dickerson, superintendent of the Cypress district of schools, spent her four-day vacation from school in Palm Springs visiting friends and relatives. The four new store buildings being erected by A. E. Arnold got underway this week. The buildings are located between his liquor store and the Cypress Cleaners. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Dixon have recently taken over the Cypress Cleaners. The Dxons are from Anaheim and were connected with the Embassy club there. Mr. and Mrs. Witcraft and Mr. and Mrs. Merriam, former owners, returned to their former home in Iowa. The new church in Cypress has recently completed a two weeks revival and the Baptist and the Nazarene churches are now conducting revival services. The Cypress Community club recently held its annual February pot-luck dinner meeting at the home of Mrs. Van Dyke on Orange avenue. At this yearly meeting past secret pals are revealed and new secret pals names drawn for the coming year. The ladies of the club sponsor a trip with delicacies to the old men's ward and the county hospital each month. Three ladies volunteer for the trip and the eatables are donated by individuals in the club. Wesley Dickinson, who is a member of the Long Beach Zoological society, was a recent speaker in Anaheim at the Kiwanis club meeting at the Elks club. Mr. Dickinson formerly was connected with the Grace Wiley Zoo. Otho Switzer who has been quite ill at his home on Moody is sitting up now, and seems to be on the road to recovery. The Orange County fire chiefs met this week at the new fire hall for a chicken dinner, which was served by the Cypress fire chiefs' wives. There were 53 present. Centralia school P.-T.A., held its Founder's Day meeting on Monday. Past presidents Mrs. Joe Furgeson and Mrs. Madge Lyen, were honored with corsages. Mrs. Lyen in turn presented the P.-T.A. with a gavel. A good attendance was reported. The decorations were in blue and gold, the P.-T.A. PINK RIBBONS An eight-pound baby daund was born to Mr. and Mrs. Chamberlin, 600 North street, Anaheim, Wednesday, ruary 23, at Fullerton Co hospital. LOS ANGELE (Better Buy Buick) Polio Cases Above Normal Polio cases in California increase one case during the week end-February 19, but the 262 cases reported during the first seven weeks of 1949 are far above normal, according to the State Department of Health. Los Angeles accounted for six of the 16 cases on record with the department for the week, Concosta county reporting two and Madera county two. Counties with one new case were Fresno, Mendocino, Pa, Placer, San Bernardino, Stanislaus. Influenza cases totaled 56 during the week while pneumonia dropped to 28. Rheumatic fever showed an increase, there being 19 cases reported as compared to six preceding week. Ten of these were in Los Angeles county. A child communicable diseases, lesions topped the field with 15 reported during the week. There were 1,421 cases of chick-ox, and 1,146 of mumps.
