Club Endorses Sanitation Bonds
Strong endorsement of the proposed sanitation bond issue to be voted upon February 28 was given by the Anaheim Optimist club which pledged its full support toward successful passage of the forthcoming measure at the regular meeting in Mother's Kitchen last Thursday night.
"Our club, composed of business men, professional men and home owners," said president J. W. Stephens, "realizes that it is necessary to provide for the growing needs of this area. Unless we have the proper facilities, Anaheim and the rest of Orange county can not grow in population and industry. By approving this measure we can better keep pace with this growth."
The local club was host to a delegation from Santa Ana headed by Glenn Bailey, president, and Barney Koster, in observance of "Old Men's Night." Other out-of-town guests were Phil Carroll of the Pasadena club and Harry Dow of Van Nuys. Dow announced details of the Fourteenth District convention to be held in Hollywood May 12, 13 and 14. The conclave will be climaxed by a governor's ball at Earl Carroll's.
Excellent entertainment for the Opti-Mrs. ladies night, and Valentine party tonight (Thursday) at Hacienda Country club, was promised by the Rev. Philip Selfridge, Jay Smith and Ernie Bullock of the program committee.

Anaheim Union Water Is State’s

The company obtains half of this water from the Santa Ana river and the remainder from the underground water supply. It shares equal Santa Ana river water rights with the Santa Ana Valley Irrigation Company.
Tuffree Is President
Present directors of the company include: John C. Tuffree, president; Edward P. Backs, vice-president; J. H. Beatty, Irvin C. Chapman, Robert R. Dowling, Roy L. Hale and Lewis Lemke.
The company’s oldest employee is W. B. Parrett, head zanjero, who has been with the company since 1802. Other members of the operating staff are: Leo J. Sheridan, secretary-manager; M. N. Plan Breakfast For Red Cross Drive Workers
All Red Cross solicitors will be given a breakfast March 1, at 7 o’clock at the Ebell club house with the Anaheim chapter’s canteen, headed by Mrs. M. A. Gauer in charge of arrangements, it was announced during the board meeting in the city hall Wednesday night of last week.
The Red Cross drive in Anaheim got underway in the business district and industrial area this week. The residential campaign will begin March 1. March 15 has been set for the close of the local drive.
Mrs. Gauer stated that 130 persons attended the recent annual dinner which was prepared by the canteen.
During the month 20 volunteers contributed 300 hours in the various chapter services, it was announced. Five knitted and 32 sewed garments were completed by the production department.
Home service had 33 cases opened during January, seven of which were new. Service was given to 14 cases. There were 35 office callers and three home calls.
Howard Loudon, co-chairman for the fund drive said that many key persons have been appointed Mrs. Lawrence Klentz will have charge of the Loara district, having been appointed since the announcement of sub-chairmen was made.

The Junior Optimist club will hold its meetings Tuesday night instead of Wednesday at the high school gymnasium according to Louis Larson of the advisory committee. L. N. Lichtenwalter will act as chairman of the Junior Optimist club oratorical contest. Prizes will be offered for those local members who finish first, second and third.
H. C. Allen of the Allen Refrigeration Company and Garry Austin of the Austin and Reed Radio Service, were inducted into the senior club by Rev. Selfridge.
Members of the door prize committee for the Valentine party at Hacienda Country club tonight are Wally Walberg, E. E. McHenry, Al Garey and Mary Mason.
Snakes, Sewer Bonds, Red Cross At Kiwanis Club
The Anaheim Kiwanis club was fed a symposium on the Red Cross, sanitation and snakes on its luncheon meeting Tuesday at the Elks club. Judge John Shea gave the club a brief history of the aims and services of the Red Cross and urged everyone to do their part. Walter Schmid, president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, spoke on the need for passing the sewer bonds at the election on February 28.
A. J. Schutte, chairman of the local citizens sewer committee, told of plans to get out the vote holders which number about 800.

Alvin F. Schwartz Claimed by Death
Alvin F. Schwartz, 50 years of age, passed away at his home at 10441 Harbor boulevard, on Thursday, Feb. 10. Born in Beman, Nebr., he had lived in Anaheim and in California since 1928.
The deceased was a member of Zion Lutheran church.
Surviving are his wife, Clara K. Schwartz of Anaheim; his mother, Mrs.Johanna Schwartz of Anaheim; two brothers, Arthur and Ernest Schwartz, both of Chapman, Nebr.; five sisters, Mrs.Ida Von Behrens of Kearney, Nebr., Mrs.Frieda Hein of Hershey, Nebr., Mrs.Lydia Loper of Prineville, Ore., Mrs.Era Fritchman of Chapman, Nebr., and Mrs.Herta Witt of Hermosa Beach, Calif.
Funeral services were held from the chapel of Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars mortuary at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. L.E.Elfert, pastor of Zion Lutheran church, officiating. Interment was in Anaheim cemetery.

A. J. Schutte, chairman of the local citizens sewer committee, told of plans to get out the vote on the bonds. He asked for volunteers to help in this endeavor and invited everyone interested to meet next Monday at the city hall to formulate plans for getting people to the polls on election day. All interested parties are invited.
Paul Grand, chairman of the day, introduced Wesley H. Dickinson, member of the Long Beach Zoological Society and connected with the Grace Wiley Snake Zoo in Cypress, who proceeded to stampede the club with some rare specimens of the reptile world who still retained their poison fangs.
He told of the grand pets that snakes made and said that they were only equipped by nature with poison to make it possible for them to get their food and help keep the balance of nature.
Without snakes, Mr. Dickinson said, the world would be over-run by pests, now controlled by snakes, that man could not exist. He ended by saying that he hoped he had made the snake some friends by his talk. The club did not move closer to the speaker until the reptiles were safely put away.

Smith Services To Be Held Sat.
Funeral services for Roy A. Smith, 54, who died Saturday, February 12, at the Hawthorne Naval Dispensary after a brief illness, will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with the Rev. Rollo E. Dunham, pastor of the White Temple Methodist church, officiating.
A native of Glenville, California, Mr. Smith had been a resident of this state for his entire lifetime. He had formerly lived in Anaheim but had been employed by the U.S. Navy Ammunition Depot at Hawthorne.
Surviving are one son, Kenneth X. Smith of Anaheim; one daughter, Mrs. R. C. Apell of Inyokern; two brothers, Fred H. Smith of Culver City and Harry C. Smith of Glendale, and one sister, Mrs. George M. Spears of Anaheim.
Interment will be in Anaheim cemetery under the direction of Hilgenfeld mortuary.
