ABRAHAM LINCOLN
On this 140th anniversary of the birth of Lincoln we find the appreciation of his life and work becoming ever more universal.
Like other men Lincoln had his faults and failings. But his virtues, his vision and courage, his humanity and humility—were so great as to far overshadow his shortcomings. Today he stands on the pages of history as one of the most compelling figures of all time.
He symbolizes the principles upon which this nation was founded and through which it has survived and grown: the equality of all men; the opportunity for the lowliest to achieve the heights; vigorous support of the right, firm resistance to the wrong; tolerance toward those of differing views and opinions.
Lincoln never lost the common touch. He was the spokesman for the masses. His profound utterances voiced the feelings in the hearts of the people. He was a great man in great things, and a great man in little things, too.
On this occasion the nation pays tribute to Abraham Lincoln and rededicates itself to the advancement and preservation of the ideals he so courageously championed.
World War I also. The program would about $6 billion a year once it got into operation.
Most congressmen are against the move because it would make the nation's financial burden intolerable. In the past, the committee sidetracked such measures, this strategy bills could be killed when coming to a vote.
But under the new rules the proposal be called to the floor of the House by chairman of the committee interested in this case Mr. Rankin of the Veto committee. Then there must be an open on the measure. Most lawmakers, it is will vote for it, since to do otherwise be political suicide.
Some observers say there is a need turn to the old rules to prevent such as this. It seems to us, however, that the need is for more congressmen to show guts.

Be My Valentine?
Do you remember (as if you didn’t) the Valentine’s Day celebration when you were in the fifth or sixth grade?
Ah, yes, there are few occasions in a lad’s—or lassie’s—life when the heart flutters quite so much. The young Romeo watches with flushed face and trembling hand to see the reaction of his Juliet to the gorgeous valentine he has sent her. And Juliet, though outwardly calm, is really no less excited.
To many of us grownups, Valentine’s Day is now just an occasion for the kids to enjoy. But it might be well to make something of it ourselves. A wife or a husband—prefably your own—will appreciate a little remembrance on this day, even if it’s nothing more than a heart shaped card saying "I love you."
It's these little touches that help to smooth out some of the bumps in the marital road.
Pensions and Politics
Reports from Washington say that the recent change in the House procedure which prevents the pigeonholing of any bill in the Rules Committee, may cost the taxpayers many billions of dollars.
Here's the set-up. Congressman Rankin of Mississippi proposes to pay pensions to all veterans, not only of World War II but of

Boy Scouts Enrich Our Count
For the past 39 years, our country been enriched by the existence of the Scouts of America. This thriving movement has affected the lives of more than 15,000 boys and men who have, in turn, tributed to the general welfare of us.
The theme of this year’s Boy Scout is “Adventure—that’s Scouting”—but much more than that. Boy Scouts get satisfaction of “learning by doing” extra things, to “help other people at all times and enjoying outdoor activities.
No yardstick can measure the harve advantage Boy Scouts bring to the rite and the community. But the Scouts do on the active support of each one of increase and extend these benefits.
Let's help them grow—and thereby for ourselves a larger crop of healthier, pier young men!
Norway Talks Back
Norway has given further indication she doesn't intend to knuckle down to let pressure. Moscow has been trying to the Oslo government from joining North Atlantic Defense Pact. But last week the Norwegians told the Kremlin, pointedly, that they’d do as they said in the matter. Some time ago Norway owed Russian “wishes” by entering into the shall Plan. No doubt the people of Norway want to remain on friendly terms with Asia. But they know which direction to for dependable economic and military sistance. Besides that, they remember her. Once bitten twice shy.

Some reasons why we seek County Division—
The proposed county of Orange, within the boundaries named in the bill now before the legislature, will be fifty miles in length, with an average width of twenty-five, containing about 1250 square miles, 900 square miles of which is available land of the most fertile description, capable of sustaining a dense population. The remainder is hill land devoted to pasturage, supporting large flocks of sheep, scarcely any part of which can be considered waste or unproductive, although sparsely populated at present. The new county will contain between 4000 and 5000 inhabitants and almost 1000 voters. The assessed value of property this year is a little less than three million dollars, and there has been paid about $65,000 in taxes for county and state purposes. After deducting $15,000 of state tax there will remain $50,000 with which to pay the interest of our proportion of the county debt and pay the salaries of our officials and other county expenses. We will be able from the first, not only to arouse any increase in debt, but to pay each year a portion of the debt which has been saddled upon us by the extravagance of the “Ring” which has always ruled the county of Los Angeles. When all our fertile valley lands are as thickly settled as are some portions, they are now, impassable. This is a heavy burden on our people when they are called upon to attend the courts or have business at the county seat.—Wm. R. Oldin.
A change will be made in the management of the Planters hotel on the first of next month. Mr. Fischer has leased the house, etc., for three years to Messrs Higbie and Lafaucherie both of whom are well known to and extremely popular with all residents of the county.
The ladies of Orange, Tustin and Santa Ana wish to give notice that on Friday, March 3rd, a donation party and festival for the benefit of the resident minister, Rev. Wm. H. Knighten, will be held at the hall of Dr. Beach in Orange. The doors will be open at 6 o'clock p.m. Admission 25 cents, supper 50 cents. The good people of Anaheim and the whole vicinity are invited to attend.

WHEN FATHER CALLED NEW YORK
How in a few short years, Long Distance has speeded service, improved clarity, lowered rates
1. Back in 1918 it was quite a thing to call long distance all the way across the country. Took a good set of lungs, too. In those days you had to use as much voice to talk long distance as you would in calling to another person eighty feet away across an open field.
1. Back in 1918 it was quite a thing to call long distance all the way across the country. Took a good set of lungs, too. In those days you had to use as much voice to talk long distance as you would in calling to another person eighty feet away across an open field.
2. Today it's just as easy to talk across the nation as it is to talk to someone just across the table from you. Continual improvements in the telephone instrument you use, in telephone lines and cables, in voice-boosting equipment along the way, make a normal voice carry 3,000 miles or more with ease.
3. Rates have gone down amazingly. In 1918, Father paid about $18.00 for the miracle of talking Coast-to-Coast. Worth it, too. By 1928, we'd been able to drop rates to about $9.00 for a three-minute station daytime call. And today you can make the same call for just $2.50, plus tax. Here's one of today's big bargains.
4. Takes less time today to get your connection. Now calls go through in an average of less than two minutes. These are just a few examples of the way telephone service grows in value... becomes a better buy. A local call still costs just a few pennies. Compared to other prices, telephone service is one of your biggest bargains today.
