'48 Vegetable Crop $920,000 Despite unfavorable conditions caused by drought, commercial vegetables and melons were harvested from 602,280 acres in 1948, and value of the huge vegetable crop to California growers was $276,459,000, according to figures released by the California crop and livestock reporting service. Orange county was listed as having approximately 2,000 acres planted in vegetables and on a statewide average, based on returns from the entire acreage, county growers received some $920,000. However, higher returns from some crops would increase this total, the service said. The Union stockyards at Omaha, Nebraska, are amongst the biggest in the country. His place was filled by Clare Skinner, president of the Southgate club, who acted as co-chairman with Anaheim president J. W. Stephens. It seems the local club men were "assisted" in the celebration by a delegation of Southgaters and Santa Anans headed by Barney Coster. No credence is given to the rumor that water pistols brought into play were squelched by an active seltzer bottle manned by a local Optimist. Another notable attending in addition to Coster who is 14th district representative, was Phil Carrell, governors aide of the Southern California 14th district. Stephens was presented the one year baby (one kewpie doll) by Coster and Carrell who cut the first piece of the birthday cake. The cake represented the initiation fee of Ernie Hall, baker of this city. Hall was welcomed as a new member of the Anaheim club.
