Motor Arrivals Into California Set Record The All-Year club, digging out from under a snowdrift, announced that motor arrivals into California set an all-time record in 1948. There were 2,744,480 motor arrivals, according to Stewart K. Widdess, second vice-president of the community tourist advertising organization. This was 1.6 per cent more than 1947. “This, however, was the gross total of people driving into the entire state, for all purposes, business as well as pleasure,” Widdess explained, “and it does not represent the number of our motor tourists. “A little more than half of them, or 1,434,072, came in over the five southern highways directly into southern California. Also, a portion of those arriving through the northern and eastern highway gateways wound up here eventually. Of the combined total, a large proportion are tourists, while others are coming on business or for other purposes.” When the number of motor tourists coming to the southland is winnowed out from the gross state motor total, and the arrivals by rail, bus and air are added to it, Widdess said the number of purely vacation visitors in 1948 comes to 3,873,395, which was also an all-time high. However, their spendings, though amounting to nearly half a billion dollars, did not set a record. Because of a decreased length of Bank of America Shareholders at Annual Meeting At the annual meeting of shareholders of Bank of America, last week, all directors were reelected, and at the directors meeting which followed all officers of the bank were reappointed. In his annual report, President L. M. Giannini said that for the bank, 1948 had been a period of measuring up to the requirements of a greater commonwealth. "Well over 10 million people now make California their home," he said. "More than three million are comparatively recent arrivals for whom it has been necessary to provide homes, schools, churches, utilities and all manner of private facilities and public works—a job of challenging proportions for banks and every other agency of our economy." Giannini stated that Bank of America maintained a high level of activity throughout the year. "We have striven," the banker said, "and I think successfully, to make California self-sustaining when it comes to financing trade and industrial expansion." A gain of 172,324,257 in total deposits was described as the principal factor in raising Bank of America's total resources above the six billion dollar mark. Grove Masons Install Officers Joseph W.
