CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
The Golden Text of the Sunday Lesson-Sermon on "Life." In all branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, is chosen from John and reads, "Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you."
A Scriptural selection from I Kings relates that the son of "the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him." And Ellijah said unto her, "Give me thy son.And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he'abode, and laid him upon his own bed...And the Lord heard the voice of Ellijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived."
In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy writes, "We must hold forever the consciousness of existence, and sooner or later, through Christ and Christian Science, we must master sin and death. The evidence of man's immortality will become more apparent, as material beliefs are given up and the immortal facts of being are admitted."

Dr. Trever to Lecture Here
Dr. John C. Trever, teacher, photographer, archeologist and director of English Bible, International Council of Religious Education, will give three addresses in Anaheim under the sponsorship of the Christian Education Committee, Anaheim Association of Christian churches.
Recently returned from a year in Jerusalem, Palestine, he will discuss "The Bible Comes Alive," Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Evangelical United Brethren church, Center at Helena street.
Monday, January 24, he will discuss "Teaching the Bible" at 2:30 p.m. at White Temple church, Broadway at Philadelphia street, and speak on "Romance of the English Bible" at that church that evening at 7:30.
While in Palestine, Dr. Trever recognized the complete copy of the Old Testament book of Isaiah in Hebrew dating from the first century B.C.
An expert photographer, he recently prepared two sets of color slides and manuscripts on "The Story of the Bible in Pictures" which illustrates the background of the Revised Standard Version of the New Testament.
The set was for the visual education department of the Methodist board of education. The same department made it possible for him to take some 3,000 color photographs for slide sets on the Holy land during his year in Palestine.
During two years of his college course at the University of Southern California, from which he graduated in 1937 with a B.A. Magna cum laude, he was an assistant in the photographic department in the college store.
During his first year in seminary at the Yale Divinity school where he obtained his B.D. in 1940, he was photographic assistant in the Yale Babylonian collection and the office of the American Schools of Oriental Research in New Haven.
Dr. Trever obtained his Ph.D.

Interesting History of White
Our youth between the ages of seven and twelve years.
The present White Temple church became the dream of Rev. Harry W. White, pastor 1916-1918, but was the accomplishment of his successor the Rev. J. F. Humphrey to whom much credit is due. During his two years pastorate the splendid parsonage at 506 E. Center street was purchased and paid for. Its ten rooms, comfort and conveniences, modern in all its appointments make it one of the best in the conference. The present church structure was dedicated April 11th, 1920 by Bishop A. W. Leonard and represented an expenditure of $90,000. The Methodist Episcopal church became "White Temple Methodist." The bungalow cottage purchased by the church adjoins the church on the east and was used by the high school department.
Wesley Hall, the latest building project was dedicated September, 1930. It is located north of the main building and the exterior finish corresponds to the architecture of the church building. It is 26 feet by 54 feet and represents an expenditure of $2,000 for building material. The labor of construction was donated by the Men's Bible class under the leadership of Mr. M. A. Gaauer, teacher of the class.
During the pastorate of Dr. R. Kells Swenerton the church celebrated its 50th anniversary, 1889-1939 in a "Golden Jubilee," October 29th. For the occasion the sanctuary was newly decorated with new furnishings, new rugs and new drapes. The pews were re-arranged, proudly awaiting the former ministers and members and old friends.
Mrs. Kate-McCullah accepted the responsibility of assembling all former choir directors and choir members. There were present Mr. Ellis Rhodes, Mrs. G.H.

INTERESTING HISTORY OF WHITE TEMPLE METHODIST CHURCH GIVEN
Mrs. George M. Tedrick of this city presented a most comprehensive history of White Temple Methodist church to a group of that church one evening last week when they held a special meeting. After many hours of intensive work and research, she prepared her presentation which we present herewith:
Methodism in Anaheim knew the proverbial hardships incident to early beginnings in an atmosphere not conducive to spiritual entrance. As early as 1875 the "Good News" was being brought to Anaheim, Fullerton and perhaps other points by a "circuit rider," Rev. J. M. Campbell, but not until 1887 came the real beginning. We find the names of J. M. Leihy in 1878 and C. N. Bolinger, in 1883, in the Conference Minutes but have no record of their achievements. This was the "Los Nietos" circuit. Rev. D. O. Chamberlayne held the first service of his pastorate in what is now the "Robert's Apartments" on the corner of Center and Lemon streets. This Godly man bent to the Herculean task of church construction. The lot was secured on Philadelphia street near Center and with his own hands, using the planing mill given by Mr. T. Grimshaw (a Presbyterian) and aided by a few kindly hearted men the attractive spired and steepled church, 26 ft. by 52 ft. steepele, was completed amid great rejoicing.
The first money toward the enterprise was donated by Mr. Shelldon Littlefield who later became Post Master of Anaheim, and whose daughter, Mrs. Eva Boyd, lives near the church on S. Olive street.
The pastor's invalid wife, Mrs. D. O. Chamberlayne, sold her much prized piano in order to purchase a bell for the tower of the church. The building was plain but churchy. Its interior was graced by chairs and benches vaping.
Johnston, 1903-1905: When completed it proudly stood beside the little white church and became a heartening power in the community life.
The Women's Home Missionary Society was organized in 1901 with Mrs. N. Calkins as president. The first year with less than one dozen members, the society gave the sum of seven dollars, but the next year their thank offering totaled thirty dollars which became a yeast cake of inspiration and encouragement for all future work. The Woman's Foreign Missionary Society was organized in 1907 and gave that year the sum of fifteen dollars. The next fourteen years saw an aggregated sum of $1,979.00 and during the year 1922 the thank offering totaled $1,000.
The Ladies' Aid Society long unorganized and unofficered was ever alert and ready for every emergency. They cleaned windows and floors of the church and parsonage and always brought up the deficit of the budget and from 1888 has been the up-holding and heartening agency for every pastor that followed in the wake of the traditionary loved and honored. Rev. Chamberlayne.
The church school has ever been, and is a vital power of life and character development. Many noble men as superintendents merit today our grateful and loving recognition. Mr. M. L. Scribner, P. H. Krick, T. P. Payne, George M. Tedrick, who served 17 years, Mr. P. W. Mathis, serving 12 years, Mr. L. P. Nichols served until illness required his resignation, Melvin Hilgenfeld for seven years, Wilbert Bonney is the present superintendent. God grant that the mantle of these leaders now falling upon the eager young shoulders may be worthy of the generation which is and that which is to come.
The first musical instrument in the church was a small Reed organ which served many years. As Keiss Swenerton the church celebrated its 50th anniversary, 1889-1939 in a "Golden Jubilee," October 29th. For the occasion the sanctuary was newly decorated with new furnishings, new rugs and new drapes. The pews were re-arranged, proudly awaiting the former ministers and members and old friends.
Mrs. Kate McCullah accepted the responsibility of assembling all former choir directors and choir members. There were present Mr. Ellis Rhodes, Mrs. G.H. Goodale, Mr. and Mrs. Hitchcock, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Dunning, Mr. and Mrs. Marian Shafer, Miss Grace Curtis, Mrs. McCullah, Mrs. Mabel Eberhard, Mrs. Kempin, Mr. and Mrs. Percy Olds, and Miss Betty Fackiner. The music was one of the "high lights" of the occasion.
Mrs. William Wagner had on display an entire gallery of photographs mostly of those who had passed on.
Two Missionaries—the product of the church school and the church—Miss Marguerite Twinem in China and Coe N.Wellman in Puerto Rico, represent White Temple church in foreign work.
The young people's missionary societies, "The Queen Esther Circle" and "The Standard Bearers" were organized in 1910 and became a fine band. They used the study book designed especially for their use supplemented by books on tithing and other subjects. Their monthly business and social meetings was a source of enjoyment and inspiration to them.
The following hames formed the group:
Wilbert Bonney, Alfred Bonney, Laura Schutz, Opal DeWitt, Clarence Bircher, Gretchen Twinem, Marie Twinem, Marguerite Twinem, Alice Wright, Florence Wright, Mildred Forsythe, Ruth Kahley and Sam Walker.
Mr. H.S.Jane merits the thanks and appreciation of the church and the community for his efforts in having installed the chimes as a memorial to those members and friends who have passed on and whose names appear here; Caroleen and Winfred Ahlstrom Cunningham, Mrs.Eda Emma Bruns, Mrs.Nancy Frost Holman, Mrs.Ada N.Egar, David Forsythe, Orion H.Biehl, Dr.J.W.Harpster, Mrs.Mary Ellen Harpster, Mrs.M.N.Moore,Mrs.Edith Krick,George Melville Tedrick, George A Starr,Mr.and Mrs.George E.Jayne,W.C.Wickins,Mr.and Mrs.George L.West,
Mrs.Lillie Dunham(mother of our Rollo Dunham).
The first money toward the enterprise was donated by Mr. Sheldon Littlefield who later became Post Master of Anaheim, and whose daughter, Mrs. Eva Boyd, lives near the church on S. Olive street.
The pastor's invalid wife, Mrs. D. O. Chamberlayne, sold her much prized piano in order to purchase a bell for the tower of the church. The building was plain but churchy. Its interior was graced by chairs and benches varying in size, color and comfort for the congregation.
During this time the Christian church had no meeting place and gladly accepted the invitation to worship with us until they found a suitable room which answered the purpose until their church was built.
The last charter member, Mrs. W. G. Bailey, who passed on to her reward five years ago, the mother of Mrs. Henry Kuchel (and grandmother of our State Controller "Tommy" Kuchel) is responsible for much of this early history through her daughter. Mrs. Bailey was a very dear friend of the Chamberlayne's and was truly one of the pioneers of Methodism in Anaheim.
During the pastorate of Rev. George Haffen, 1905-1907, extensive improvements were made. An addition 16 feet by 24 feet was added, then another extension of 12 x 12 feet was made. New furnishings were provided for the interior in modern style and appointment—oak finished pews, electric lights and other luxuries and on June 10, 1906, when the able and gifted John L. Pitner, Presiding Elder of the District, re-dedicated the re-constructed church, the little flock thanked God and took courage.
There was no home for the pastor, until the parsonage cottage was built under the leadership and pastorate of Rev. Biede A.
17 years, Mr. P.
As there was no paid organist Mrs. gene Adams, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. S. J. Paschall, acted in that capacity ten years without remuneration. Her sister, Mrs. Louisa Henderson was a soloist at the time and her mother was a charter member of the church. The Ladies Aid Society in 1909 purchased a piano to take the place of the small organ and a choir was formed under the direction of Archie Hollingworth, a nephew of Thomas Hollingworth, their names are recorded in the whose home is on the east corner of the church street.
The Fidelis—The Woman's Bible Class—deserves especial mention. Organized in 1920 by Mrs. Dora Brown, it is now composed of 50 faithful women, who through the years have demonstrated their faithfulness as the name Fidelis implies. Leaders and teachers from this class have ever been recruited when needed for service. More than one thousand dollars was raised last year for foreign relief and for work at home. Teachers who have been the inspiration of the class are Mrs. Dora Brown, Mrs. Frances Smith, Miss Bella J. Walker, Mrs. T. W. B. Demaree, Mrs. Melissa Hauswald and Mrs. C. H. Owens and others who have substituted.
The Junior Church, organized under the leadership of Mrs. E. A. Collins, has had a fine influence on the hearts and lives of whose names appear here; Carolen and Winfred Ahlstrom Cunningham, Mrs. Edna Emma Bruns, Mrs. Nancy Frost Holman, Mrs. Ada N. Egar, David Forsythe, Orion H. Biehl, Dr. J. W. Harpster, Mrs. Mary Ellen Harpster, Mrs. M. N. Moore, Mrs. Edith Krick, George Melville Tedrick, George A. Starr, Mr. and Mrs. George E. Jayne, W. C. Wickins, Mr. and Mrs. George L. West, Mrs. Lillie Dunham (mother of our Rollo Dunham).
This history would be incomplete without speaking of the "Old Fashioned" class meeting led by Mr. William Wellman assisted by Mrs. Wellman at/the little organ for many years./These were seasons of spiritual refreshments to all who attended and especially to that good man, the leader.
It has been impossible to give credit to all to whom it is due.A memorial list would be too long, we know and can testify that their names are recorded in "The Lamb's Book of Life." May we who remain be as faithful to the task that yet is ours and may White Temple Methodist church in reality ever be our "Sabbath Home."

Elect Schutte Zion Lutheran Church Leader
A. J. Schutte was again chosen to head the congregation of Zion Lutheran church when the first quarterly voters' meeting of the year was held in the parish hall Monday night.
Other officers who were re-elected include Ray Grimm, secretary; William Claussen, financial secretary; H. T. Moennich, elder; August Ehlers, trustee; Dick Henning and Martin Geissler, finance committee; and Walter Knigge, superintendent of the Sunday school.
Retiring after more than twelve years as a member of the board of education for the parochial school was Walter Henning. Clarence Newkirk was elected to fill the post.
The building committee which was in charge of the project of building a new school on North East street last year made its final report and was dismissed with thanks. In giving his report, Fred Kahlen, chairman, paid tribute to members and friends of the congregation who donated labor to such an extent that the building was completed at much less cost to the church than had been estimated. Members of the committee besides Kahlen were Ray Miller, Ray Grimm, O. M. Geissler and O. C. Ulrich.

'Quickie Divorces'
Face New Curbs
Legislation designed to curb "Reno and other quickie divorces" was introduced in the California legislature.
Proposed by senator Thomas Keating of San Rafael the measure would require persons securing out-of-state divorces to prove their legality.
Keating said his bill provides if a citizen of California moves to another state for the purpose of establishing residence for divorce and remains in that state less than one year the presumption may arise that his residence in the foreign jurisdiction was invalid.
He said even though a person may reside one year in another state and returns to California within six months thereafter the same presumption may be made
