Aggies Beat Williams 37-35; Take Undisputed Lead in City BB League A fighting Aggie five came from behind with a run to do to rip a fast Williams team 37-35 and take over disputed first place in the City Basketball League last in the Anaheim high school gym. With a minute and a half to go the Williams quintet held a 35-33 edge on a tiring Aggie five. Lopez fouled Faessel as he went in to shoot giving the Aggie forward two free throws. Faessel scored the first one and elected to take the ball out of bounds instead of shooting. A quick pass to Berg who hooked one in put the Aggies out in front 36-35 and then a pass interception and a lay-up by Hargrove clinched the game and first place for the Aggie Sporting Good's team. Faessel was high scorer for the Aggie aggregation and for the game, dropping a total of 12 points. Berg and Merk sparked the winners with their hard-fighting and drive. For the losers it was Ochoa and Arbello, both players playing a hard game, fighting all the way and scoring between them 19 points for the Williams team. Garden Grove Wins 49-45 Garden Grove upset the Ritz team 49-45 in the first game. The Merchant team held the lead throughout the game and were not seriously challenged until late in the second half. After almost knocking off the first place Aggie five last week, the Ritz team was expected to take the Garden Grove boys to camp. But an improved GG quintet took the floor and gave every indication that they are going to prove a threat before the league ends. Mayor Charles Pearson To Pitch First Ball picture film reel. Other top prizes include a football autographed by the squads and coaches of Notre Dame, Army and Navy; and baseballs autographed for the event by the New York Yankees, the Cleveland Indians and the Boston Braves. Local merchants are also contributing gifts for the big charity event, according to White. Mr. White stated that the idea for such a program came from a similar event staged in Los Angeles during the war when $4000 was raised for a charitable organization. “If we are successful this month in our event, we will endeavor to make it an annual affair,” he stated. Tickets for the Sunday afternoon festivities are $1.25 for adults and 75 cents for children and are on sale at the Spanish Kitchen, Elliott's Cafe, Danish Bakery and Delicatessen, Valencia Hotel and the California Coffee Shop. Keith's Kolonist Kagers make their debut on the home court to-morrow evening, taking on the "dark horse" Newport Beach Sailors in their second Sunset League tustle. It will be the first league game for the Sailors who have looked impressive in pre-season tilts. Coach Keith has really been giving his basketeers a work-out since they dropped their initial game to Orange on Tuesday. Although the starting line-up for Anaheim is uncertain it appears from practice sessions that both Lloyd Trapp, forward and Dimmy Lopez, guard will see more action Friday than they did on Tuesday. While Anaheim was dropping a heart-breaker to Orange, Newport was coming through with a thrilling overtime victory over Brea, defeating them 43 to 42 in a practice game. It was the second time that the Sailors had turned the trick against Brea, having defeated them for the championship in the Huntington Beach Tournament consolation play-offs. Coach Reid will hit the port of Anaheim with a couple of fast and flashy forwards in the persons of Bob Yardly and Don Ward and jumping at center is Bill Jackson, last year's All-Sunset league center. Probable starters at the guard positions are Carlton Mears and George Reeves. In other pre-season games, Newport has beat Laguna Beach and Tustin and really climbed all over a hapless Downey five. MRS. KAMMRATH BACK FROM VAN NuYS Mrs. Katherine Kammrath, 624 South Clementine street, this city, returned home last week after enjoying the Yule holidays with her daughter, Mrs. Esther Webb and family of Van Nuys. Everybody Reads The Gazette Manges Shines But Anaheim Loses 35-34 Anaheim High School leading 34-33 with minutes to go dropped a heartbreaker to a fast-stepping Orange five, 35 to 34 in the Sunset league curtain-raiser in Orange, Tuesday night. The locals froze at the controls—missing shots in the final minutes of the game—anyone of which would have given them the victory. Coach Keith's 1949 edition is no world-beater but they are a fast, hard fighting aggregation sparked by Carly Menges who with 16 points was high scorer for the night. The locals led at the end of the first quarter with the score at half-time 13 all and at the end of the third period it was 27-22 with the boys from Orange in the lead. But in a thrilling fourth period both teams came to life and kept a shouting crowd on their feet until the final gun. The lead changed four times in the last three minutes of play. Sloppy officiating marred the game with the refs repeatedly missing flagrant violations while calling "minor" infractions.
